{"value"=>"<p>Thomas was one of the founders of the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE) in 1957, and served as a member of its National Board and many of its committees until 1967. The organization was committed to combating the threat of nuclear war, promoting peace, publicizing the danger of nuclear testing, and eventually, opposing the war in Vietnam. The subseries contains Thomas' correspondence written on behalf of the organization and exchanged with leading SANE personnel, including Homer Jack, Donald Keys, Trevor Thomas, Norman Cousins, Clarence Pickett, David Riesman, Sanford Gottlieb, and Benjamin Spock, concerning the establishment of the organization, its activities, the determination of its policies and its internal feuds. This includes many carbon copies of letters exchanged between these members. The subseries also contains an abundance of printed material, including copies of mass mailings to the SANE membership and special committees, committee meeting minutes, internal memoranda, an incomplete run of the SANE Action Newsletter and other publications.</p>"}
