His training began in 1928 with Marie Rambert and continued with Pearl Argyle, Harold Turner, and Margaret Craske. His career included: dancer and choreographer for Ballet Club (later Ballet Rambert) from 1930-1937; founder and choreographer of London Ballet, 1937-1940; resident choreographer of Ballet Theatre (later American Ballet Theatre), New York, 1939-1950; artistic director, Royal Swedish Ballet, 1952-1964; associate director, American Ballet Theatre, from 1974; and, as teacher for Metropolitan Opera Ballet School and Juilliard School. His works include <span class=\"emph\">Jardin aux Lilas</span>(Ballet Rambert, 1936), <span class=\"emph\">Dark Elegies</span>(Ballet Rambert, 1937), <span class=\"emph\">The Judgement of Paris</span>(Westminster Theatre, London, 1938), <span class=\"emph\">Gala Performance</span>(London Ballet, 1938), <span class=\"emph\">Pillar of Fire</span>(Ballet Theatre, 1942) <span class=\"emph\">Dim Lustre</span>(Ballet Theatre, 1943), <span class=\"emph\">Undertow</span>(Ballet Theatre, 1945), <span class=\"emph\">Lady of the Camellias</span>(New York City Ballet, 1951), <span class=\"emph\">Offenbach in the Underworld</span>(Philadelphia Ballet Company, 1954), <span class=\"emph\">Hail and Farewell</span>(Metropolitan Opera Ballet, 1959), <span class=\"emph\">Echoing of Trumpets</span>(Royal Swedish Ballet, 1963), <span class=\"emph\">Shadowplay</span>(Royal Ballet, London, 1967), and <span class=\"emph\">The Leaves are Fading</span>(American Ballet Theatre, 1975). Some of the letters are copies but most are original. The correspondence covers the period 1939-1987, but most of the letters are from 1986-1987. A letter from <span class=\"persname\">Sarah Woodcock</span> contains xeroxes of 1934 Mercury Theatre programs of <span class=\"persname\">Marie Rambert's</span> group and <span class=\"emph\">Vauxhall Gardens.</span>Some correspondence was received in subject files and remains in the pertinent folders: i.e. there are letters in the files for <span class=\"emph\">Dim Lustre, Pillar of Fire, Sunflowers,</span>and <span class=\"emph\">Undertow.</span>For example, a letter in the <span class=\"emph\">Sunflowers</span>folder from <span class=\"persname\">Tudor</span> to <span class=\"persname\">Isabel Mirrow</span> (11/12/85) contains this, “...also, to be remembered that, as in all <span class=\"persname\">Tudor</span> pieces, the torso is the most important part of the body, and the legs move in order that the body shall be carried where it needs to go...”</p></div></li><li><div class='series-title'><a href='/dan/19723#c363667'>III. {"value"=>"<p>Other items of interest pertaining to Tudor may be found in the Hugh Laing Papers, c. 1943-1899. *MGZMD 64. This collection was given to the Dance Collection with the Tudor material. It contains some correspondence that relates to Tudor, including a 1946 letter from John Gielgud pertaining to <span class=\"title\">Romeo and Juliet</span>(folder 22), 7 letters from Isabel Brown to “Hugh and Mr. Tudor” which require permission for viewing, and condolence letters to Laing at the time of Tudor's death from Tudor's family and friends. Also in the Laing collection are set and costume sketches for some of the Tudor ballets.</p>"}
