John J. McNamara (1897-1988) was a New York City-based architect. McNamara—both in partnership with architect Thomas W. Lamb, and individually—was known for designing and renovating several Broadway theatres. The John J. McNamara theatre architecture papers contain correspondence, notes, and drawings for McNamara's renovation and restoration projects in the Manhattan theatre district between 1958 and 1983. The Belasco, Winter Garden, St. James, and Little Theatres are represented in the papers, as well as Carnegie Hall. Also included are McNamara's early drawings for the 42nd Street redevelopment project, and general correspondence related to McNamara and Lamb's work as architects.
