Harry Belafonte (1927-) is a Jamaican-American musician, actor, and activist best known for popularizing calypso music with international audiences, and his involvement in the American Civil Rights movement. Josephine Cogdell Schuyler (ca. 1900-1969), the daughter of a wealthy white Texas family, was an artist and writer who managed Philippa Schuyler's musical career. Philippa Duke Schuyler (1931-1967) was a child musical prodigy, concert pianist, composer and journalist. The collection documents the lives of musician and journalist Philippa Schuyler, her father, journalist and writer George Schuyler, and mother Josephine Schuyler, who managed Philippa's musical career, from the 1930s to the late 1960s. The collection consists of studio and candid portraits of the Schuylers; Josephine's family, the Cogdells; friends, colleagues and acquaintances; celebrities; political officials; and military personnel. Also included are views of concerts; radio broadcasts; social events and gatherings; street scenes; foreign travel; and family pets. Depictions of George Schuyler's family are very limited, and there are no depictions of his early life. Some of the images were used in the book "Composition in Black and White: the Life of Philippa Schuyler" by Kathryn Talalay, published in 1995. less

The collection consists of individual and group portraits and candid shots of professional, amateur and youth group athletes, mostly male, as well as some coaches, owners and sports fans; views and candid shots of sporting events and competitions; some views of sports classes and athletic training sessions; views of sports award ceremonies and charity events; and some publicty shots. The sports most heavily depicted in the collection are baseball, basketball, boxing, football and track and field. The collection is limited in depicting sports figures and events from the nineteenth century to the 1930s, and from the 1990s to the present. less

Barbara Mae Watson (1918-1983) was a lawyer, United States diplomat, and the first female and the first Black Assistant Secretary of State, serving under Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter. Watson also co-founded one of the first Black modeling agencies in 1946, served as Executive Director of the New York City Commission to the United Nations from 1964 to 1966, and was Ambassador to Malaysia from 1980 to 1981. Watson's photographs, dated from 1921 to 1983, depict her professional and personal life through prints, negatives, and illustrations. less
