The Washington Square Players was an independent, non-commercial theatre group founded in 1914 by Lawrence Langner, Edward Goodman, Philip Moeller, Lee Simonson, and others wanting to produce plays of artistic merit. The group was seminal in beginning the "little theatre" or "art theatre" movement in the U.S., attracting innovative theatre artists. Their first production opened at the Bandbox Theatre in 1915, later moving to the Comedy Theatre as the group became more successful. Katharine Cornell acted with them. Productions included works by Zoë Akins, Susan Glaspell, Maurice Maeterlinck, and Eugene O'Neill. The group ended in 1918, due to World War I and financial difficulties. Several members of the group went on to form the Theatre Guild. Original costume, set, backdrop, and poster designs (mostly color), and published plays for productions by the Washington Square Players, 1915-1918. Although many of the 69 designs are for unidentified productions, titles represented include Aglavaine and Selysette by Maurice Maeterlinck, adapted and translated by Ralph Roeder, with costume designs by Joseph Platt (J.B. Platt), 1916; The hero of Santa Maria by Kenneth Goodman and Ben Hecht, with costume designs by William Rienecke, ca. 1917; The death of Tintagiles by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Philip Moeller, with unsigned costume designs, 1917; The magical city by Zoë Akins, with unsigned set design, and White Studio photograph, 1916. Other designers repsesented are Elsie R. Brown, Muriel V. Sibell, Robert L. Lawson, and Robert Locker. Posters include Bushido by Takeda Izumo, 1916, and Plots and Playwrights (three short plays), Comedy Theatre, 1917 (poster by George C. Evans). There are also 5 drawings (4 are pencil and ink) by Clara Tice, including "an impression of the Dolly Sisters." Published playscripts include acting versions of Another way out (one-act play) by Lawrence Langner, and two copies of Trifles by Susan Glaspell; all were published as part of the Plays of the Washington Square Players series by Frank Shay in 1916, and are stamped "W.E. Gerome Ragni (1935-1991) was a stage actor and musical theater lyricist and librettist active from the 1950s through the 1980s, who achieved renown as one of the authors and original stars of the musical, Hair (1968). Born Jerome Bernard Ragni in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he attended suburban Scott Township High School, where he appeared in various school productions. In 1954, Ragni made his professional stage debut in a Washington D.C. production, Shadow and Substance. His acting career was put on hold when Ragni enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955. Following his years in the Air Force, Ragni moved to New York and found work in the rapidly growing Off-Broadway theater community. In 1964, he met fellow actor James Rado, who would become a major figure in Ragni's personal and professional life. In 1965, Ragni and Rado began writing a rock musical that would depict contemporary life in New York's East Village, the hippie movement, the anti-Vietnam war protests, and the generation gap, symbolized in a central metaphor of long hair. In early 1967 they teamed up with Canadian composer, Galt MacDermot, who provided the music for their book and lyrics. Ragni and Rado's original intent with Hair was to introduce the uptown Broadway world to that other world downtown and they tried to interest mainstream musical theater producers, such as David Merrick and Hal Prince, but Joseph Papp, head of the Off-Broadway Public Theater, with whom Ragni had worked previously, was the only one interested in the project. Hair opened at the Public Theater on October 29, 1967, with Ragni in one of the lead roles, Berger. The Off-Broadway production was a critical and financial success and produced a cast album. Michael Butler, the heir to a Chicago fortune, decided to finance and produce the transfer of the show to Cheetah, a disco nightclub in the theater district in December of 1967 and eventually to Broadway. Ragni, Rado and McDermot made significant revisions to the show, writing several new songs and a largely new book. This new version of Hair opened on Broadway on April 19, 1968 to enthusiastic reviews and became phenomenally popular with audiences, running for 1,750 performances. A national tour and sit-down productions of the show played in other major US cities, as well as productions in dozens of other countries and in many different languages In 1979, Hair was made into a film directed by Milos Forman. Its hit songs, such as "Aquarius" and "Let the Sun Shine In" have been covered by many singers. After their success with Hair, Ragni and Rado played themselves in Lions Love (1969), a film by Agnes Varda about Hollywood celebrity. Ragni's next Broadway musical, another collaboration with Galt MacDermot, Dude (1973), was not successful critically or commercially. In the 1980s, the Hair trio of Ragni, Rado, and MacDermot reunited for another musical, YMCA (also titled Sun) which was not produced. The Gerome Ragni papers consist mainly of professional files pertaining to theater and film projects written by Gerome Ragni, or in which he appeared as an actor. There are items from productions Ragni acted in during school and later in New York, such as Hamlet (1964), Hang Down Your Head and Die (1964), The Knack (1964) and Viet Rock (1966) but the majority of the material in this collection pertains to the original Broadway production of Hair (1968). There is also some material on subsequent projects with which Ragni was involved, including the show, Dude (1973), and the film, Lions Love (1969). This collection also contains personal items, including correspondence with Ragni's family and friends and documents on his Air Force service. The strength of this collection is its extensive coverage of the many productions Hair in the United States and internationally, represented here with photographs, programs, posters and press materials. Barry Hyams (1911-1989) was an American theater producer and press representative who publicized over 40 Broadway productions throughout the course of his career. His production work was limited to Off-Broadway pieces associated with Rooftop Productions. Hyams was the head of publicity for the Lincoln Center Repertory Company during the 1960s, and the editor of Theatre: The Annual of the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center. The Barry Hyams papers date from 1947 to 1963 and document Hyams' work as a press representative for Broadway. The collection contains publicity files and scrapbooks for over 30 Broadway productions, many of which were produced by Robert Whitehead and the Producers Theatre. This collection is rich with material demonstrating the nature of Broadway press relations. Max Liebman was one of the leading pioneers in producing, directing, and writing several highly credited television productions in the 1950s. Growing up in New York, he attended the Boys High School in Brooklyn, and got his start in entertainment, performing and writing in vaudeville. He was the producer and director of the Tamiment Theatrical Workshop in the Poconos, a summer stock playhouse, and brought the company's show to Broadway as The Straw Hat Revue in 1939. Liebman was a co-writer for Danny Kaye for several years, and was also credited as a writer for the 1945 movie-musical Ziegfeld Follies. Max Liebman Productions was incorporated in the State of New York in 1948, and in 1949 Liebman made his debut as a television producer with the production of the Admiral Broadway Revue. Liebman also launched Your Show of Shows his most celebrated and critically acclaimed television production that same year, which he produced and directed from 1949 to 1954. The show was broadcast from the International Theatre in New York City and starred Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. The papers of Max Liebman contain correspondence, scripts, drafts of scripts and rewrites, production files, production notes, clippings, legal documents, and personal papers including bills, photographs, and artwork that document his television and theater production career from 1949 to 1977. less

Marius Sznadjerman was born in Paris in 1926. He escaped to Spain with his parents in 1942, moving to Venezuela where he attended the School of Fine Arts in Caracas. After moving to the United States in 1949, Sznajderman studied at Columbia University with scenic designer Woodman Thompson and printmaker Hans Mueller, receiving both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and has taught at several universities, including New York University, School of Visual Arts and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Sznajderman has also had numerous exhibitions of his work over several decades. Over 350 original designs, principally for sets (mostly color), floor plans, and studies created by Marius Sznajderman for Circle in the Square Theatre and the French Art Theatre in the 1950s. The collection also contains production and research notes, as well as publicity material and posters. There are also some publicity materials for Circle in the Square, programs, fliers, and postcards for individual productions, blueprints, elevations, as well as a number of black and white photographs. Also included are costume designs (possibly for The firebrand, ca. 1924), several sketches, a sketchbook with notes, ca. 1918-ca. 1924, by noted stage designer Woodman Thompson, perhaps related to Sznajderman's research for the play Ludus Coventriae.
