The New York Times Company Records: General files document many aspects of The New York Times Company, the newspapers it publishes (most significantly The New York Times but also The Chattanooga Times and other regional and international newspapers), its subsidiary holdings, and its financial management and daily operations. The files primarily pertain to The New York Times and are rich in information about Times staff and their roles and responsibilities; the intellectual and physical production of the newspaper; the impact of historical events on its form and content; and myriad decisions made in the course of daily operations. The bulk of the material in these files dates from the twentieth century, though there are also significant nineteenth century records which predate Adolph S. Albert S. Bard (1866-1963) was an attorney and civic activist in New York City. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School, Bard came to New York City in 1893, where he engaged in the practice of corporation and general law until a few years before his death. From 1901-1935 (or 1938) he practiced with his partner, Leighton Calkins (1868-1955), under the firm name of Bard & Calkins at 25 Broad Street. Bard continued to practice law until 1960. Bard was an energetic participant in civic and urban affairs and a member of numerous civic and professional organizations, to which he contributed his legal expertise. As a preservationist, he opposed many of Robert Moses' plans for the development of New York City. He successfully organized opposition to the Brooklyn-Battery Bridge project and was instrumental in the preservation of Castle Clinton. Bard also retained life-long affiliations with his hometown of Norwich, Connecticut, and the schools he attended. The Albert S. Bard papers include correspondence, notes, reports, draft legislation, printed material, photographs and posters documenting his decades of participation in urban affairs, especially in matters relating to city planning, good government, billboard advertising, and ballot reform. Bard's civic affiliations represented in the collection include the Citizens Union of New York, City Club of New York, the City Fusion Party, the Fine Arts Federation of New York, the Honest Ballot Association, the Mayor's Billboard Committee, the Municipal Art Society, and the National Roadside Council, among many others. Personal and family papers include Bard's personal correspondence and letterbooks, appointment books recording his professional and social activities, a typescript genealogy of the Bard family, a few photographs, and printed memorabilia. less

The Piccirilli Brothers were a family of stone carvers and sculptors whose marble sculptures included the lions in front of the New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The Piccirilli family papers include photographs of the family, their studio, and sculptures; letters; clippings; and ephemera. Among the materials are a contract and letters concerning a New York City police memorial created by Attilio Piccirilli; two letters to Attilio from Charles Gillette; one letter to Attilio from Paolino Gerli (in Italian); letters from Horatio Piccirilli's son, Nathan, written while he was serving in the Navy during World War II; and newspaper obituaries for Horatio. The earliest items in the collection are photographs of Giuseppe Piccirilli and Attilio Piccirilli. less

The Ford, Roelker, and Turle families were united by intermarriage and resided in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. The members of these families include the descendants of Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891), a prominent businessman and lawyer, and Emily Fowler Ford (1826-93), well-known poet, novelist, and granddaughter of lexicographer Noah Webster (1758-1843).This collection spans multiple generations and consists of family papers, photographs, and genealogical research papers of the Fords, Roelkers, Turles and related families in the 19th and 20th centuries. less

William John Wilgus (1865-1949) was a civil engineer who worked for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. By 1899 he was the chief engineer for construction and maintenance of way and in 1903 became vice-president in charge of construction. During those years he supervised the planning and construction of Buffalo Union Station, the Weehawken (N.J.) Terminal and the modern Grand Central Station. In 1907 Wilgus opened his own consulting practice and advised railroad companies on construction and improvement projects for states and municipalities including several concerned with the improvement of passenger and freight transportation in the New York Metropolitan area. During World War I he directed transportation for the Allied Expeditionary Forces in France. After his retirement from private practice in 1930, he devoted much of his time to writing and research on military and civilian transportation issues while working in the private sector. Collection consists of records that document Wilgus' professional activities as a civil engineer. New York Central and Hudson River Railroad papers, 1895-1931, include correspondence; research notes, articles and pictures, engineering reports, minutes, legal papers, photographs and other materials relating to the new Grand Central Station and electrification of the suburban lines leading into it, and the rehabilitation and expansion of the railroad's other lines. American Expeditionary Forces records, 1915-1933, contain correspondence, writings and translations by Wilgus, writings by others, and source materials concerning military transportation during World War I. Private consulting practice records, 1908-1930, of his consulting firm in New York City consist of materials about New York transportation and major railroad projects and of general client files. Public service activities series, 1933-1945, contains papers relating to various projects on which he worked. American Society of Civil Engineers records, 1914-1930, include Wilgus' papers as member and president of the New York chapter in 1920-1921, and records of the United Engineering Society. His writings, research notes and related correspondence, 1913-1947, contain essays, notes, correspondence, and printed materials on issues of military reorganization, transportation and war preparedness. In 1939 the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Protestant Church united to form the Methodist Church (U.S.). Collection consists primarily of records of Methodist Episcopal churches in New York City and vicinity with scattered records from churches in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York State, Africa, and Europe. Materials include correspondence, reports, minutes, church records (births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, membership, etc.), sermons, diaries and journals, financial records, literary papers, sketches, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter. Most of the records are from churches in New York City with lesser amounts from churches in the suburbs of New York City, upstate New York, and some general records of the Methodist Episcopal Church. less

Also included are some papers of members of the Sanford, Van Schaick and other prominent families of the Hudson and Mohawk Valley areas of New York State. The Schomburg Menu Collection consists of 84 menus and related ephemera such as banquet and private dinner menus, wine lists, floor plans, invitations and photo covers, dated from 1893 through ca. 2000. Included in the collection are menus from Harlem and New York restaurants, such as Sylvia's restaurant and Home Sweet Harlem Café, and nightclubs such as, Club Baby Grand, The Cotton Club, Savoy Ballroom and Smalls Paradise.
