Nathan "Nate" Salsbury (1846-1902) was producer and manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, a highly successful show business enterprise that toured the United States, Europe, and elsewhere from the 1880s well into the 20th century, and featured William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Born in Illinois in 1846, Nathan Salsbury entered the U. S. Army while still in his teens, first as a drummer boy and eventually as a soldier with the 89th Illinois Regiment of Infantry, fighting in Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas. After the war, he became an actor in various stock companies, appeared for a time with his own troupe, Salsbury's Troubadours, then retired from performing in 1887. Meanwhile, in 1883, Salsbury had been a key figure in the launch of Buffalo Bill's Wild West, an outdoor extravaganza that dramatized frontier life, built around the personality of onetime soldier, scout and hunter William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917). The show, which also starred sharpshooter Annie Oakley and, for one season, Chief Sitting Bull, was a worldwide success for many years, outlasting its producer and manager Nate Salsbury, who died on Christmas Eve of 1902, at the age of 56. His daughter Rebecca Salsbury James (1891-1968) was an artist who lived for most of her life in Taos, New Mexico. Consists of a typescript of Nate Salsbury's reminiscences, much of which concerns his Civil War experiences, his life as a touring actor, and, briefly, his years with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. In addition to Salsbury's memoir, there are four folders of correspondence, mostly written to Rebecca Salsbury, although there is one telegram to Cody and Salsbury from actor Henry Irving. There is one letter dated 1917 to Rebecca's brother Milton Salsbury from actor James O'Neill, and a number of condolence letters to Rebecca upon Milton's death in August 1927, including one from James' son, playwright Eugene O'Neill. There is also a two-page account, written in 1943 by Wild West Show factotum Harry Tarleton, of a musical production Nate Salsbury mounted around 1895 called Black America, which featured an all African-American cast, and toured several cities in the U.S. before it disbanded. less

Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The collection holds programs, telegrams, photographs, biographical material, and scrapbooks containing images of stage actors from the early 1900s. less

The papers of Walter Abel consist primarily of correspondence, contracts, speeches, and clippings documenting his work as an actor. The professional correspondence is not extensive: the bulk is single letters received from a wide variety of individuals, much of it letters of thanks. A few outgoing letters discuss proposed productions. Correspondents include John Golden, Robert Edmond Jones and Eugene Ormandy. The contracts file is incomplete. Speeches, for the most part lectures on Shakespeare, theater history, and the psychology of acting, reflect his tireless work promoting the theater to college students and others. Clippings consist of production reviews and interviews with Abel. Production materials are mostly miscellaneous single items such as call sheets and schedules from films in which Abel appeared. Organizational work consists of minutes and correspondence pertaining to his work with ANTA, the Hollywood Victory Committee and other war service organizations. The collection also contains personal material on his family, awards, and a few scrapbooks of photographs. less

The collection appears to be a useful research source for detailing the life of a stock actor, writer and musician of the 19th century. A'Becket includes information on his work schedule and his travel schedule in the circuit theaters. The Gates and Morange Studio was founded by Frank E. Gates and Edward A. Morange and was located in New York City. Gates was born in Chicago and Morange was born in Bronxville, New York. Both men studied at the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, Missouri. Although Gates and Morange had worked together since 1894, the partnership's first Broadway credit was Straight from the heart by Sutton Vane and Arthur Shirley (1897). The studio designed scenery for more than 50 productions over four decades, additionally painting and supplying countless others. Clients included Liebler Co., Florenz Ziegfeld and George C. Tyler. Designers included Thomas Benrimo, William E. Castle, Richard Gates (brother of Frank), Charles Graham, Alexander Grainger, Arne Lundborg, Orestes Raineiri, and Edward Morange. Edward Morange died on May 20, 1955 in Torrington, Connecticut after a long illness at the age of 90. Original set designs, curtain designs, drops, and olio designs, mostly color, produced by the Gates and Morange studio over four decades for theatrical productions and for businesses, trade shows, and several exhibitions. Although most of the designs are undated, the bulk of the collection appears to date from the 1920s. Among the more than 75 productions included are The daughter of heaven by Pierre Loti (ca. 1912); Dolce Napoli (ca. 1913); Earl Carroll vanities (1923); For valor by Martha Hedman and H.A. House (1935); Gridiron Club productions (1935); An international marriage by George Broadhurst (ca. 1909); The lady of the lamp by Earl Carroll (1920); Music in the air (musical), music by Jerome Kern, with designs by Joseph Urban (1932); Nancy Brown (musical), music by Henry K. Hadley (ca. 1903); Song of the flame (musical), music by Herbert Stothart and George Gershwin, with designs by Joseph Urban (1926), and a number of Ziegfeld productions. Of particular note is Rose-Marie (musical) by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II (1924), which includes 3 photographs, showing the development from an initial photograph to the scenery in place on the stage (1924).
