Collection consists of letterbooks, 1768-1790, kept by Fitzpatrick, relating to trade, to slaves, and to the British occupation during the American Revolution. Samuel Galloway (1720-1785) was a merchant of West River, Maryland. He married Ann Chew (1725-1756) with whom he had four children, John, Benjamin, Mary and Anne. John (d.1810), also a merchant, acted as executor for the estate of his sister Mary's husband, Thomas Ringgold, Jr. of Chestertown, Maryland. The collection consists of letters, 1739-1812, chiefly to Samuel Galloway (1720-1785) and his son John Galloway (d.1810) relating to trade in slaves, tobacco, flour, wine, horses, and general merchandise as well as to family affairs. Included also are John Galloway's account book, 1777-1780, kept as executor of the estate of his brother-in-law, Thomas Ringgold, Jr. and other miscellaneous acounts, dating chiefly from 1793. Correspondents include Thomas Ringgold (1715-1772) of Chestertown, Maryland, and members of the extended Galloway, Ringgold, Chew, and Tilghman families. less

The patriarch, Samuel Ferguson, was a prosperous merchant who established familial and commercial relationships with other wealthy and socially prominent New York families, including the Walton, Morewood, Day, Ogden, Lyde, and Fisher families. The Ferguson family papers, 1727-1943, consist of 18th and 19th century correspondence, business records, financial and legal documents, diaries, and family miscellany of the Ferguson and allied families. The Middleton "Spike" Harris slavery and abolition collection consists of individual documents pertaining to slavery and abolition in the United States. Included are legal documents, indentures, manumission papers, bills of sale, agreements to hire slaves, other business records, deeds, letters, and indentures referencing specific slaves and their masters and detailing the situations for which the documents were produced. The states in which these documents were issued are Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. There are also letters from the following abolitionists: Granville Sharp, Gerrit Smith, Charles Sumner, and Francis Jackson. less

The Robert Southey manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. Among the writings are over 30 holograph poems, including "The Pilgrim to Compostella" (two versions); "Ode on the Death of Queen Charlotte;" and a substantial part (26 poems written by Southey and an additional 8 poems written by Humphry Davy, Charles Lamb, Charles Lloyd, and William Taylor copied in Southey's hand) of the manuscript of The Annual Anthology for 1799. There are also holograph reviews, notes, a commonplace book for a planned biography of the English Dissenter George Fox, and three books from Southey's library.
