Continental Army troops rebuilt the former British Fort Stanwix on the Mohawk River near the present Rome, N.Y. and renamed it Fort Schuyler. (It later became known again by its old name to avoid confusion with Old Fort Schuyler at Utica.) On 2 August 1777 the garrison under Col. Marinus Willett and Col. Peter Gansevoort was besieged by British troops under Col. Barry St. Leger on their way to join Gen. John Burgoyne at Albany. The siege was lifted 21 days later by the arrival of Continental troops under Gen. Benedict Arnold. The journal has been attributed to Lt. William Colbrath, who arrived at the fort on 19 July. Includes account of raids and scouting in the vicinity of the fort before the siege, events of the siege itself, including the first military raising of the American flag, and the arrival of Arnold.
