Edwin Riley McCarty was born in Pennsylvania in 1830 and worked in the hotel industry in New York City. The McCarty family genealogical research papers consist mainly of the correspondence of Edwin R. McCarty, dating 1869-1903, concerning his genealogical research on the McCarty family of Pennsylvania. McCarty traced the descendants of Thomas McCarty and Elizabeth Lancaster, both of Bucks County, who were married in 1765. The collection includes a few letters to and from Aaron Lancaster, 1853-1854, genealogical notes, family trees, and a map of northern Bucks County showing land held by the McCartys, as well as miscellaneous clippings and printed material. The collection also includes manuscript and typescript copies of an 1880 essay, The Families of Lancaster and McCarty: A Sketch by R. B. H. of New York.
