Nathaniel Brassey Halhed, English orientalist. Halhed's translation from Sanskrit of an ancient Hindu law code was published in 1776; his English grammar of Bengali in 1778. · To Thomas Maurice, oriental scholar and librarian : 2 autograph letters signed : -- 26 Feb [no year] : (MISC 0271) : on some sensitive issue; including, "I am as impatient under [ceremony] as a Monkey in harness." -- 10 May [no year] : (MISC 0272) : replying to a letter "which conveys to my mind some, perhaps not a few[,] uncomfortable sensations." Both letters discuss the bookseller Robert Faulder, who published works of Halhed's in 1793 and 1795. Both letters also bear a few annotations in another contemporary hand, perhaps that of Maurice.
