Henrietta Maria [Harriet] Bowdler, English writer and literary editor. She is best known for her Family Shakespeare, a collection of Shakespeare's plays with scenes and references cut out that she found morally offensive. Her brother Thomas was credited with The Family Shakespeare for many years, and it was their surname that inspired the coinage of the verb "bowdlerize.". To Longman & Rees, publishers : 1 autograph letter signed : 28 Apr 1815 : (MISC 2010) : on the availability in Bath and Edinburgh of her Family Shakespeare, promising to arrange some copies to be sent to them. Tipped in to William Upcott album of collected letters of eminent women, and shelved under "Upcott" with bound manuscript volumes.
