Scope and arrangement
The letterbook contains about 240 letters from Johnson (and a few from his grandnephew, John Miles, Johnson's business associate in later years and the executor of his estate) written between September 1795 and July 1810. Some are in Johnson's own hand; others are the work of copyists. The correspondence is primarily of a business nature; however, since many of the writers Johnson published were also his friends, a number of these letters are personal in tone as well. Notable recipients include Joseph Priestley, Charles Wollstonecraft, Mary Wollstonecraft, Sydney Owenson (Lady Morgan), Maria Edgeworth, and Erasmus Darwin.
