Mary Harris Cornwallis, of Wittersham, Kent, England, was the author of two religious works. In 1778, she married William Cornwallis (1751-1827), the rector of Wittersham for some thirty years. They had two daughters, Sarah (1779-1803), and the scholar and writer Caroline Frances Cornwallis (1786-1858). 1 commonplace book : 1784-1807 : (MISC 4040) : 93 leaves, consisting of a blend of anecdotes, observations, and advice from Cornwallis to her daughters on such topics as education, the "cultivation of the mind," marriage, and motherhood. There are also 24 pages of reading lists, by genre: history, poetry, children's books, religious works, etc. Vellum binding. Shelved under "Cornwallis" with bound manuscript volumes.
