Born in 1901 in Blackstone, Virginia, Reverend John Milton Coleman became the first African American appointed to the New York City Board of Education. In 1933, Coleman succeeded Reverend C. Peterson Boyd as the rector of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York. A decade later, he became the first African American appointed to the Executive Board of the National Council of St. Andrew of the Episcopal Church. In 1958, New York City Mayor O'Dwyer appointed Coleman to the New York City Board of Education and he was subsequently reappointed to the board by Mayor Wagner, but had to resign after three years due to ill health. He died in 1961. There are nine unbound scrapbooks documenting Coleman's achievements throughout his career. The scrapbooks contain minutes, newspaper clippings, letters, certificates, speeches, reports, press releases, and newsletters primarily related to his work outsite of his pastorate with St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Of special interest are scrapbooks four and nine. Scrapbook four contains letters to Coleman as a member of the Police Brutality Investigation Committee. Scrapbook nine contains a report by the New York City Board of Education Commission on Integration. The report contains a list of members, a questionnaire, and a resolution for action. There are also subcommission reports on zoning, teachers' assignments, personnel, and community relations. less

Geraldine Louise Wilson (1931-1986), was an early childhood specialist, poet, writer and civil rights activist. Wilson would begin her educational career in Philadelphia. She moved to New York City and would eventually become Director of the Regional Training Office for the Head Start Program. She also worked as a consultant. During the 1960s Wilson joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and was a co-planner of the Mississippi Institute for Early Childhood Education. The collection, dating from the 1950s to the 1980s, mostly focuses on Wilson's career as an educator, consultant and poet and to a lesser extent the Civil Rights Movement. There are audio and moving image materials that support the collection. less

The collection consists of the papers, 1910-1991, of Melva L. Price, a professional educator, community activist, and performing arts supporter, who lived in Harlem most of her life. The bulk of the collection is comprised of correspondence to and from Price, and includes letters from friends, colleagues and officials of the organizations to which Price belonged. There are also personal diaries, 1922-1936 (scattered); two of Price's grade-school notebooks; autograph books for 1916 and 1920; and souvenir journals from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's Mississippi Health Project (1930s) for which Price did field work, collecting data and giving support to the medical team. less
