The Rosamond Gilder Papers consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, magazines, promotional literature and other material relating to the career of Miss Gilder. The files primarily deal with Miss Gilder's involvement with Theatre Arts Monthly. (Miss Gilder inherited the files on Theatre Arts Monthly from Edith Isaacs, the first editor of the magazine.) Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The collection holds programs, telegrams, photographs, biographical material, and scrapbooks containing images of stage actors from the early 1900s. less

Emily Ann Wellman was an American stage actress in the early 20th century. In 1921, she toured with the Shubert Vaudeville, starring in a flash drama (or ten-minute play) she also wrote and directed, titled The Actor's Wife. The Emily Ann Wellman scrapbook contains clippings of reviews, advertisements, and feature articles about Wellman's performances on tour and in New York City from 1921 to 1923. Ewald Schindler (1891-1948) was a German-born actor, director, and producer of theatre and opera. After fleeing to Czechoslovakia and Italy during the rise of the Nazis, he immigrated to the United States in 1941, where he became director of the King-Smith Playhouse in Washington, D.C. and founded The Playhouse Studio, a school of drama, with Norwegian dancer Liljan Espenak. Additions to the Ewald Schindler papers date from 1899 to 1947 and contain letters, photographs, scrapbook pages, and personal ephemera that document Schindler's family and professional life. Scrapbook pages with clippings, photographs, and a program document Schindler's direction of The Green Cockatoo at the King-Smith Playhouse, dated 1942 to 1943. Correspondence is with Kurt Schindler, Liljan Espenak, and Mary Wigman, discussing family and professional issues. Photographs include individual portraits of the Schindler family as well as a cabinet card depicting Czech opera singer Emmy Destinn. Personal ephemera consists of a recitation book and Schindler's social security card. Correspondence and the recitation book are in German. less

The Theatre Guild, established in 1919 by Theresa Helburn, Lawrence Langner, Philip Moeller, and Helen Westley, is an American theatrical association. Since its inception, the Theatre Guild has produced over 200 original theatrical productions, many of which have become Broadway classics. The Theater Guild records (1949-1952) document the Theatre Guild's administrative activities during the planning and execution of the production of Carousel at the Stoll Theatre in London in 1950, and Oklahoma! for the 1951 Berlin Arts Festival. less

This collection includes original drawings and renderings for costume designs for various theatrical productions created by Vincente Minnelli for the Balaban Katz and Paramount-Publix theatre companies, under the art direction of Frank Cambria. All designs are works on paper, in a variety of media. More than half the collection are finished drawings; the remainder are unfinished sketches. Only two productions are clearly identified: Alice in Wonderland (Chicago, 1925) and Oliver Twist. Additionally, there are two portrait photographs taken by Minnelli of Cambria family members and a 1928 letter from Minnelli to Cambria describing his proposed designs for a Paramount-Publix production. less

His writing career began as early as his college days as president of the LAMPOON, in which he wrote many articles. His reputation as a humorist grew when he became editor of the New York Tribune's Sunday Magazine. During the 1920's he was the dramatic editor for both Life Magazine and the New Yorker. His career also included writing, acting and directing for MGM. The Robert Benchley Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, programs and reviews and document both the careers of him and his son, Nathaniel. less

The collection is incomplete in that it contains only correspondence from his later years and photographs and scrapbooks from his early career. Correspondents include: Ilka Chase, Helen Hayes, Lillebil Ibsen, Alfred Lunt, Armina Marshall, Mary Martin, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Emlyn Williams and Peggy Wood. There is a large gap in the materials for the 1940s and 1950s. Some production photographs were separated to the Theatre Collection photo files.
