Lore Segal is a New York based novelist and children's book author. A daughter of Austrian Jews, Segal escaped Nazi occupied Vienna on the first Kindertransport in 1939. This collection contains letters and documents of her family in Austria and England during World War II, and their emigration to the Dominican Republic and the United States; letters to Segal from throughout her life; letters from Segal as a young girl and documenting her time at Yaddo; and literary manuscripts documenting her novels, children's books, short stories and other writings. The Citizens for a Quieter City records (1950-1980) document the work of the organization through correspondence with government and private sector officials; sound and video recordings; meeting minutes; records of noise complaints; scrapbooks; financial records; posters; and published research and information on noise pollution. Henderson M. (Henderson Malcolm) Wolfe (1873-1951) was a banker who held executive positions in several New York City banks; he also served as Chief Auditor of Accounts in New York City’s Finance Department in 1911. He was born in Muhlenburg, Pennsylvania and graduated from New York University Law School in 1904. The Henderson M. Wolfe scrapbook, dated 1908-1917, contains pasted business correspondence, news clippings, receipts, event programs and other printed ephemera reflecting his career as an executive banker and civil servant in New York City. Materials document Wolfe's association with the Corn Exchange Bank and other institutions, his service in the City’s Finance Department, and his return to the banking industry. Affiliations with charitable, social, and professional organizations are also represented. Letters are chiefly congratulatory messages on his appointments; a few carbon copies of outgoing letters are also present. The scrapbook (1 volume in 1 box) also includes some biographical data and two photographic portraits of his son Henderson W. Wolfe Jr. as a child. Gertrude Finkel (1898-1994) was a librarian with The New York Public Library, associated for many years with the Library's Hamilton Fish Park Branch on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Branch opened in 1909 at 388 East Houston Street, serving a predominantly immigrant population. It closed in 1958 to prepare for removal to a new location, reopening at 415 East Houston Street in 1960. The collection consists of a scrapbook (1 volume, disbound), dated 1931-1963, containing watercolor drawings and pasted photographs and clippings depicting activities at the Hamilton Fish Park Branch Library, accompanied by some loose items and personal correspondence of Gertrude Finkel, dated 1940-1970. Content focuses on reader services and community programs at the Branch, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, evoking the ethnic makeup of the Lower East Side, especially its Jewish heritage. A few later staff photos mark the transition from the "old HF" to the new location. less
