These three logbooks were kept on board the U.S.S. Macedonian during a trip from New York to Japan between February 1853 and May 1855. Two were kept by John R. C. Lewis and the third was kept by Lawrence F. Lewis. The Macedonian was one of the ships which joined Commodore Matthew Perry's expedition and accompanied him on his second visit to Japan. John R. C. Lewis' volumes include journal entries which describe numerous places passed on the voyage including the Azores, Canary Islands, Island of St. Helena, Hong Kong, Canton, Formosa, Bonin Islands, Japan, Samoda, Whampoa, and Manila. Lewis also provides an account of Commodore Perry's landing in Japan and of the Japanese Head Commissioner's visit to Perry, as well as a fight between the Rebel party and Mandarin party of China in Whampoa Reach. Nathaniel Sheafe Waldron was a Brevet Major in the United States Marines. His letter book dated October 4, 1831 to February 18, 1857, contains correspondence while stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, New York, Tampa, Boston, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Letters include brief references to Indian troubles in Florida and tables of marine statistics The volume also contains the following logs kept by Waldron: cruise of the U.S. Frigate Hudson, commanded by Captain John Orde Creighton, from New York to Rio de Janeiro and Monte Video, from September 26, 1828 to January 22, 1829; U.S. Frigate Boston, commanded by Captain Creighton, from Monte Video to Buenos Aires, January 23 to February 7, 1829; and U.S. Frigate Brandywine, commanded by Captain Jacob Jones, from Rio de Janeiro to New York, August 27 to October 9, 1829 less

These two logbooks were kept by Sargent S. Day on board numerous ships. One volume contains entries made from May 27, 1835-November 28, 1838 aboard an unidentified ship on voyages between Boston; Hobart, Tasmania; and Sydney, New South Wales in 1835-1836 and a voyage from Boston to St. Joseph, Florida, in November 1838 The other volume is a logbook kept on board the ships Austerlitz, N. B. Palmer, Shooting Star, and Washington Allston between 1851 and 1854. Entries were made on a voyage from San Francisco to Calcutta aboard the Austerlitz, in September -November 1851. That ship was abandoned and the crew was taken on board the N. B. Palmer, bound for Shanghai. This logbook also contains entries made from December 23, 1851- March 17, 1852 aboard the Shooting Star, whose shipmaster was Judah P. Baker, on a voyage from Canton to Boston. and aboard the Washington Allston, of which Sargent S. Day was shipmaster, from Boston to San Francisco, Singapore, Penang, Calcutta, and back to Boston, from September 1, 1852-January 14, 1854 less
