She founded the Capuchin Convent in Bagnacavallo, Ravenna, which served as a fashionable school for girls of noble families. Lord Byron's daughter by Claire Claremont, Allegra, was brought to the convent in January 1821; she died there in April 1822, at age five. Sir H. B. Neale, bt., and Capt. C. Jones. To John Wilson Croker, politician and writer : 1 autograph letter signed : 1 Aug 1813 : (B'ANA 0221) : on giving Lord Byron passage in the Boyne. On July 13, Byron had written Croker, then Secretary to the Admiralty, for passage in the Boyne or any other ship-of-war bound for the Mediterranean. On learning, however, that he could not take along Augusta and his servants, he declined the proferred passage (Marchand, 399, 403 n.1). less

James Hamilton Browne, the Scottish philhellene who joined Lord Byron as he sailed for Greece from Italy in the summer of 1823. Browne claimed to have been discharged from the British service for his sympathy to the Greeks in their war for independence from the Ottoman empire. In September of 1823, it was decided that Browne, along with E. J. Trelawny, would go ahead of Byron to assess the situation on the mainland of Greece. Browne and Trelwany traveled together as far as Hydra, after which Browne returned to London to assist in raising a loan. John W. Burgen, of London. Burgen composed a poem in tribute to Lord Byron and inscribed it in the visitor's album at Byron's tomb in the parish church at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire on October 1, 1832. In 1834 the contents of the album were published under the title Byroniana, edited by J. M. Langford. The John Cam Hobhouse manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: a holograph inscription in his copy of the works of Pope, attesting that the book was previously owned by Byron; a holograph English translation from the original Greek of Thomas Love Peacock's poem, "A White-Bait Dinner"; and a notebook of holograph notes in Italian and English on Berni, Montaigne, Bayle, Roscoe, and others. The correspondence is dated chiefly between 1823 and 1850, and discusses publishing matters, his political career, and various matters relating to Lord Byron and his legacy. In the years following their separation and his death, she dedicated herself to philanthropic causes, with a special interest in education of the poor. The Anne Isabella Byron, Lady Byron manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include two commonplace books from her youth, notes she kept in a printed journal, and two short essays. The bulk of the correspondence is from between 1835 and 1855 and discusses her personal life, her ideas on education, and her philanthropy.
