Some original 18th and 19th century documents including a letter to Catharine Ludlow Ogden Hammond from her mother, S[arah] Ogden in Newark, concerning the mother's recent widowhood and other family matters, 1790; a family Bible record, 1806-1940, of the Barretts and Kortright families; an approbation (letter of introduction), November 17, 1840, for Philip Schuyler, who was a United States Consul at Liverpool and part of a commission "...to assist their subjects and people in their commerce and traffick there...," signed by Queen Victoria and Lord Palmerston; marriage certificates of Louis Phillippe de Luze and Sarah Ogden, Trinity Church, New York, 1821, and Arthur Mackie Foley and Sarah Alice de Luze, St. Mark's Church, New York, 1878 or 1879; and manuscript and typescript copies of 18th and 19th century wills, marriage certificates, and other legal documents. Stedman Shumway Hanks was an aviation engineer and genealogist. Hanks was best known for patenting "flight strips," auxiliary landing areas for aircraft alongside public highways, advocating for their development and implementation in various parts of the country in the 1930s. This collection consists of twelve volumes and other family papers containing correspondence, photographs, genealogical charts, clippings, printed material, wills and other family papers compiled by Hanks in the course of his genealogical research on the Hanks, Johnston, Shumway, and allied families. less

The Stokes Family Genealogical Research Papers consist of genealogical research materials compiled and collected by Anson Phelps Stokes, author of the Stokes Records (1910), and his daughter, Helen Phelps Stokes on the Phelps and Stokes families, who were primarily bankers and merchants in New England and New York in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Materials in the collection include correspondence, manuscripts of genealogical works, family trees, genealogical pamphlets, notes, numerous copies and a small number of original family documents. Rosette King Leslie married George Robert Leslie III. George Leslie attended the Bovee School, a private boys' academy in New York City between 1925-1927. Richard Hyer (d. 1975), a World War I veteran who served in the 7th New York Infantry, lived in Warner, New Hampshire. The Richard Hyre Genealogical Research papers contain Hyre's correspondence with historical and genealogical societies, libraries, and other record holders relating to the Hyer family (also spelled Heyer, Hyre, and Hyres) and other allied families including the Bicker, Gerret, Demil, Forrester, Schipper, and Van Pelt families. David-Parsons Holton, M.D., was a founding member of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. His wife, Frances K. Holton, was the first female member of the Society. The Robbins family genealogical research papers consist of correspondence, 1880-1882, of genealogist David-Parsons Holton, M.D., and his wife Frances K. Holton, and other materials relating to their research on the Robbins family, as well as correspondence of collection donor Christine (Mrs. William J.) Robbins, 1947-1956, regarding her own research. The collection includes genealogical family trees and charts, among them a "Chart of Descendants of John Robbins, of Wethersfield, Ct., through his great great Grandson, Capt. Elisha Robbins," published by David-Parsons Holton in 1882. Also present are extensive notes and notebooks on the Robbins family compiled mainly by Frances Holton, with notes by Orrin G. Robbins on a branch of the family in Copenhagen, New York; also, copies (some typed, some transcribed and some in photostat) of original Robbins family documents, including property deeds from 1661 and 1689, attested by C. The Sands family of Block Island, Rhode Island, trace their lineage to James Sands, born in 1622 in Staffordshire, England. The collection consists of a genealogical research and personal papers relating to the Sands family. Personal papers include wills, deeds, indentures, and other documents dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. The Sharpe-Stevens family papers include genealogical research notes and family papers on the ancestors of Rosa Sharpe Stevens and, to a lesser extent, her husband Yale Stevens. Families include the Sharpes of Pennsylvania and the related Alden, Denison, Montgomery, Patterson, Sill and Yale familes of Connecticut and elsewhere in New England. The collection contains original Sharpe family correspondence, dating from 1895 to 1934, as well as copies of letters to and from Rosa Stevens' grandfather, Pennsylvania coal industry pioneer Richard Sharpe, 1856-1894, which discuss the illness and death of his daughter Emily, his coal business, arrangements for his son to attend the school of Rev. Dr. Lyons of West Haverford, PA, and other personal and business matters. Family correspondence of 1907 contains preliminary discussions with sculptor Frank Edwin Elwell regarding the commission of a sculpture honoring one of the family's revolutionary war ancestors. Also present is an 1898 diary of Rosa's aunt Elizabeth Montgomery Sharpe and a letter she received from Jane Addams in 1895. Stevens family correspondence, 1898-1951, is chiefly addressed to Rosa Stevens or "Cousin Mary." Of note are copies of three letter of Charles J. Lora Cornelia Little, public health activist and a descendant of the Ferris family through her maternal grandmother Ruth Ferris, was born Lora Williams, in Waterville, Minnesota Territory in 1856. Adelaide Milton de Groot (1876-1967) was the daughter of William de Groot, a ship owner employed in the China trade and his second wife Elizabeth King Hawley. A painter, art collector and philanthropist, Miss de Groot was born in New York City and moved with her family to Nice, France in 1891. She lived in Europe for forty years before returning to New York in 1933. Her New York cousins included yachtsman, composer and photographer Frank Seymour Hastings and his brother the noted architect Thomas Hastings, who were the sons of Reverend Thomas Samuel Hastings and Fanny de Groot. Adelaide de Groot's sister Elizabeth married an Italian diplomat, Guilio Caravadossi, the Count of Aspremonte. After de Groot's return to New York, she pursued an interest in her family's genealogy. The papers contain the research of Adelaide Milton de Groot - including her notes, family charts, and correspondence. Adelaide Milton de Groot researched the de Groot family and the families related to her by marriage, namely the Bosworth, Brantingham, Foote, Hastings, Hawley and Robinson families. The collection consists primarily of handwritten genealogical notes and charts. Correspondence, pertaining to her genealogical research, copies of original documents, and photographs of gravestones and family houses are also included. less

John Ross Delafield (1874-1964) was a New York attorney and amateur genealogist whose work to trace the Delafield and other related family lines culminated in his private publication of Delafield: A Family History in 1945. The Delafield Family genealogical research papers contain notes and correspondence by John Ross Delafield created while researching his book as well as the research of others, both relatives and professional genealogical research firms. less

Iantha Schultz Cantine (1864-1951) extensively researched the genealogy of the Eastgate family. Shortly before her death, she wrote a book entitled The Descendants of John Eastgate, 1791-1837 in the United States, using information which she gathered from family members, historic family documents, and her own recollection. Intending to accompany her aunt's book with further historical documentation, in 1958 Katherine E. Schultz arranged dozens of mostly 19th century family letters into a collection. She also created a volume of corresponding transcriptions and family photographs. This is the material that comprises the Eastgate Family Papers. less

George Ingraham Willis (1912-1988), a native New Yorker, conducted research on the history and genealogy of the Willis family. The collection is primarily composed of his research notes, correspondence and the original documents he assembled relating to the Willis, Ingraham, Davenport, Davis and allied families. The original documents include legal and personal papers of his immediate family, as well as of earlier ancestors. Of note are the personal papers of John Davenport, his maternal great-grandfather, which include extensive correspondence with his wife and business partners, 1823-1866, and documents relating to his tenure on the New York City Board of Education. less

Linda Faile Browning Herrick (1889-1981) was the eldest daughter of John Aaron Browning, founder of the Browning School. She was married to Dayton Edwards Herrick of Westchester County, N.Y. The Linda Faile Browning Herrick collection contains genealogical research, notes, pedigree charts, clippings, photographs, and correspondence on the Browning, Faile, Dayton, Dieckmann, Doyer, Greer, Lynch, and Herrick families. Included are 19th and 20th century family records, correspondence, and Bible records, some present in photocopy; and photographs of people, houses, and cemeteries. Also present is a notebook, possibly used in school, 1863, that might have belonged to William H. Dieckman; and report cards, 1870-1871, from the Columbia Grammar School, New York, of "Master Browning.". less

Joseph Hillyer Brewer was a publisher, librarian and president of Olivet College. Approximately fifty percent of the collection consists of genealogical notes, charts, correspondence, and clippings resulting from his research and that of other family members into the histories of the allied Ackerman, Bogardus, Bradley, Burr, Chardarayne, Creighton, Giles, Cropsey, Havens, Keeler, Montfort, Pryer, Roorbach, Stayner, Schuyler, Van Vechten, Ward, and Whiting families. The remainder of the collection is comprised of miscellaneous original material, ca. 1797-1927, relating to the above families, including military documents, correspondence, invitations, notices, tickets, calling cards, legal documents, and other family ephemera. Edna Pearl Clay Goodspeed (1884-1963) was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who served as a nurse overseas during World War I. Her ancestors included Revolutionary War soldiers Charles Mathewson, Capt. Aaron Coe, David Clay and Capt. Samuel Cobean, and tailor Otis Madison, who pioneered a new system for garment measuring and cutting in the early nineteenth century. At the time of Goodspeed's death she was preparing a history of the the Clay family of Ohio and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius and other families, entitled Some Ohio Pioneers. Her writings, notes and research materials were given to genealogist Helen B. (Blanchard) Hartman with whom Goodspeed had been collaborating before her death. The Clay family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical scrapbooks; correspondence of Edna Clay Goodspeed and Helen B. Hartman relating to their genealogical research on the Clay family and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius, Cobean, Hanna, Brinckerhoff, Coe, and Boyd families, with notes and family trees; some personal papers, 1916-1957, of Edna Clay Goodspeed; and the manuscript of Goodspeed's work, Some Ohio Pioneers. The scrapbooks contain original photographs of members of the Clay, Coe, Brinckerhoff, Cobean, DePuy families and their connections, circa 1850-1951; writings and correspondence, 1811-1962, including several original nineteenth-century letters, 1811-1858, with transcriptions, reflecting the everyday life of the Coe family, particularly Eliza Hanna Coe; clippings, 1903-1955; and family trees. The Colt family traced their lineage to John Colt who immigrated to the American colonies in 1636 or 1638 and Peter Colt (1744-1824) who served in the Continental Army from Connecticut. The Colt Family genealogical research papers consists primary of the research notes and correspondence of Francis S. and Harris Dunscomb Colt, brothers who sought to document the Colt family's descent. The papers also include genealogical charts and lists, as well as histories of the Colt family. The correspondence consists largely of responses to letters from people who bore the Colt family name and dates mainly from 1930-1936, with some additional letters from the late-19th and late-20th centuries. The family histories include a typescript copy of Peter Colt's "Account of the Colt Family," Francis S. Colt's manuscript on the history of the Colt family, and other typescript and manuscript copies of unidentified historical summaries of the Colt family. Charles P. Staubach (1870-1966) worked as a sales executive for the Burroughs Corporation, served as an officer in the 8th Infantry Regiment, New York National Guard, and was the first president of the Century Road Club Association. The Charles P. Staubach family history notebooks, compiled by Staubach from 1933-1955 and continued by his sons, 1966-1977, concern the history of his and his wife's families across multiple generations. The collection contains genealogical and biographical information on his parents, Baldwin Staubach and Elise Schwab, his wife Edith Arnold's parents, George Arnold and Frances Dubois, and numerous allied families.
