She worked as an editor at The Paris Review, under George Plimpton, and co-edited the literary and visual arts magazine Grand Street with Walter Hopps. She was married to William vanden Heuvel and Torsten Wiesel. The Jean Stein papers (1916-2016) document Stein's career and life. The works most extensively represented are Stein's oral history biography of the American actress and Andy Warhol muse, Edie Sedgwick, Edie: An American Biography, (1982); and the oral history West of Eden: An American Place, which focused on five families and individuals Stein considered essential to the history of Los Angeles. Personal files, which include letters Stein received from novelist William Faulkner, document Stein's childhood of wealth and privilege as a the daughter of talent agent and MCA founder, Jules Stein; and her adult life as a member of New York's intellectual elite. less

Ann Giudici Fettner is a medical journalist who reported on the AIDS crisis in the United States and Africa. She is the author of the book The Truth About AIDS: Evolution of an Epidemic, and was a scientific correspondent for the New York Native. The papers consist of correspondence; notes and manuscripts; transcripts of interviews; and personal miscellany such as clippings, press releases, and book reviews. Correspondence largely concerns Fettner's book and her articles for the New York Native, and includes responses from the scientific and medical communities, from people with AIDS, and from the gay community at large. Letters include anecdotal descriptions of alternative therapies and folk remedies, as well as scientific research and discussions on early clinical trials. Many writers evince frustration with the mainstream media for its marginalization of AIDS as a "gay disease," and the slow or inadequate response from the New York City Department of Health, NIH, WHO, and other national and global health authorities. A small quantity of notes and letters pertain to the spread of the disease in Zaire. Correspondents include Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Benjamin Bradlee, and Robert Gallo. Notes and manuscripts pertain to books, articles, and interviews by Fettner. Transcripts are from interviews with members of the medical community documenting their early clinical experience with AIDS and related diseases like Kaposi's sarcoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, and Pneumocystis pneumonia, and their personal experiences with AIDS patients. Letters, photographs,an interview transcript, and other material by or about Esther Johnston, a librarian who began her career with the New York Public Library in 1916, and who retired as Chief of the Circulation Department in 1951. Letters are from friends and colleagues, and chiefly concern her retirement. The transcribed interview was conducted in 1965 by library historian Phyllis Dain, and discusses Johnston's career with the Library. Several offprints of articles about literature and librarianship written by Johnston are also included, as is an undated draft of an article titled "Dancing with Doughboys," recounting her participation with civilian relief groups in France in 1918. Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. (1917-2007) was a Pulitzer Prize winning American historian and Robert F. Kennedy supporter and biographer. Addressing a private group in a Brooklyn Heights (New York City) home on October 5, 1964, Schlesinger delivered a speech in support of Robert F. Kennedy's candidacy to become a U.S. Senator. Schlesinger's intention was to present Kennedy as a liberal ally to skeptical New York City Democrats. In his speech, Schlesinger discussed the influence of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy on American politics; situated the carpetbagger accusations aimed at Kennedy in historical and constitutional context; and invoked Kennedy's role in the United States's response to the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example of his leadership ability.
