Ida May Mellen (1877-1970) was an aquarist at the New York Aquarium, 1916-1929. She wrote books and articles in the fields of marine biology and felinology. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, family and personal papers, photographs, and printed matter. Includes personal letters, 1903-1959; correspondence, 1907-1960, with editors, publishers and others relating to Mellen's writings and professional interests; correspondence, 1925-1958, concerning cats; original manuscripts and typescripts of her major unpublished writings; typescripts of poems, lectures and radio talks; and genealogical papers including her study of Mellen family ancestry in America. She was a well-known artist and sculptor. Clifford Odets, a leading playwright of the 1930s, was born in Philadelphia on July 18, 1906. He began his performing career as "The Rover Reciter" in local talent shows, on radio, and in local stock theatre companies. In 1929, he acted in small roles with the Theatre Guild, from whose auspices emerged the Group Theatre in 1931. Odets' first successful play was the one-act play Waiting for Lefty, which received its first theatrical production by the Group Theatre in March 1935. In 1936, Odets began working in Hollywood as a screenwriter on The Silent Partnerfor the Group. His 1937 play Golden Boy, also written for the Group, became his biggest commercial success. His last Broadway hit was The Country Girl in 1950. His last finished play, The Flowering Peach, was a finalist for the 1954 Pulitzer Prize. Odets died in Los Angeles on August 14, 1963. The Clifford Odets papers contain diaries, scripts, screenplays, personal and professional notes, research materials, clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks. In addition, the collection contains other writings by Odets such as poetry, short stories, articles, and paintings. Lastly, the collection holds Margaret Brenman-Gibson's biographical notes on Clifford Odets and his father, Louis J. Odets, for her book Clifford Odets - American Playwright: The Years from 1906-1940. less

Ernst Papanek (1900-1973) was an Austrian-born child psychologist and educator known for his work with refugee children during and after World War II and for his involvement in socialist parties in Europe and the United States. Collection consists of Papanek's correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, sound recordings, and other materials, most of which relate to his work with children's homes in Europe and the U.S. General correspondence concerns juvenile delinquency; refugee children of World War II; and Papanek's directorships of American Youth for World Service, 1945-1951, Child Projects of the Unitarian Service Committee, 1946-1947, Brooklyn Training School for Girls, 1948-1949, and the Wiltwyck School for Boys, Esopus, N.Y., 1949-1958. With the establishment of Jacob’s Pillow as an educational and performance venue, Helscher served as the business manager, and publicist for the theater. Her close relationship with Ted Shawn was the basis for her possession of an extraordinary array of documents and photographs that evidence Mr. Shawn’s artistic career, as well as her own professional acumen and efforts.
