William Smith (1727-1803), Episcopal clergyman and educator, was the first provost of the College of Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania) and first president of Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. William White (1748-1836), Episcopal clergyman, was the rector of Christ Church and St. Peter's Church, Philadelphia, and first presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. William Smith's letter, written at Chester, Maryland, 1786 September 11 to Rev.
