Collection primarily relates to Pickens' work as NAACP Field Secretary and Director of Branches, and contains a great deal of correspondence with NAACP officials. Of interest is material chronicling Pickens' and the NAACP's involvement in the Scottsboro Case in Alabama. Correspondents relating to the NAACP include James Weldon Johnson, Walter Francis White, Mary White Ovington, Arthur B. Spingarn, Joel E. Spingarn, Roy Wilkins, Thurgood Marshall, and W. E. B. Du Bois. Other correspondence is between Pickens and friends, acquaintances, fellow scholars, and business associates. There is correspondence with many organizations with which Pickens was involved, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, League for Industrial Democracy, Socialist Party of America, National Council of the Young Men's and Women's Christian Association, American Committee for the Protection of the Foreign Born, and the Council for Pan American Democracy. Correspondents include Claude A. Barnett and Percival L. Prattis of the Associated Negro Press, and other individuals in government, education, and church affairs, among them John Haynes Holmes of the Community Church of New York. Writings are primarily composed of typescripts (manuscripts and editorials), speeches, and mimeographed Associated Negro Press columns and newspaper clippings of articles and editorials written by Pickens. William Walker Rockwell (1874-1958) was a Congregational minister, professor of church history and librarian. After being ordained a minister of the Congregational Church in 1905, he joined the Union Theological Seminary in New YOrk City where he taught church history and was the librarian from 1925 until 1942. His wife, Ethel Dean Converse Rockwell (1875-1933), was a national figure in YWCA work. Collection consists of correspondence, investment and organizational papers and lecture materials of William Walker Rockwell; Edith Rockwell's papers; and family genealogical information. Correspondence, 1901-1934, concerns personal and professional matters and includes printed matter and ephemera. Investment papers, 1909-1943, contain correspondence and printed items. Organizational papers, 1907-1938, are Rockwell's files relating to the Manhattan Congregational Church and to various organizations of which he was a member. Lecture preparation materials, 1914-1945, consist of notes, course outlines, bibliographies, correspondence, and ephemera. Ethel Rockwell's papers, 1909-1936, include correspondence about Radcliffe College, personal matters, the YWCA, as well as her estate papers. Correspondence, speeches and writings, 1914-1989, include copies of outgoing letters, 1918-1943, describing her life and work in China and incoming letters, ca. 1951-1980, from friends in China with information which she used for her talks and for the Far East Reporter. Committee for a Democratic Far Eastern Policy (CDFEP) records, 1945-1955, 1982, are a combination of Russell's files and those of the Committee and include minutes of meetings, press releases, pamphlets, newsletters, and subject files. Far East Reporter files, 1953-1989, contain a complete run of the publication plus correspondence, itineraries for speaking tours, clippings and periodicals that she used as source material, financial records, and manuscripts. Also, income tax records, 1956-1986, providing information about Russell's business expenses; her notebooks, daybooks, calendars, etc., 1919-1988; notes, catalogs and correspondence concerning her collection of Chinese pottery; biographical materials; printed matter, 1917-1989, including clippings and China-related newsletters. less
