Members of the Bryant family were descended from Peter Bryant (1767-1820) and Sarah Snell Bryant (1766-1847) of Cummington, Mass., and included the poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) and his brothers, who settled in or around Princeton, Ill. The brothers were primarily involved in farming in the area. The collection consists of correspondence and other personal papers of various members of the Bryant family. Correspondence is with family members, friends and business associates and concerns pioneering and farming in Illinois and Kansas, Cullen Bryant's life as a West Point cadet, family affairs and finances, and discussions of politics, particularly slavery and the Civil War. Also, diaries, manuscript poems of John H. Bryant, land papers, photographs and other family memorabilia, and printed matter. less

Ferdinand L. Dunkley (1869-1956) was a New Orleans-based musician, poet and writer. He organized the New Orleans Choral-Symphony Society and was active in various musical and literary groups. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notebooks, financial papers,and printed matter. Correspondence, 1941-1955, includes personal letters written by Dunkley and his wife, letters concerning his dealings with the Edward MacDowell Association and the New Orleans Music Teachers Association. His writings consist of typescript copies about choir singing; handwritten recipe book; and notebooks of musical compositions, poetry and essays. Emma Catherine Manley Embury (1806-1863) was an American poet and novelist who was a frequent contributor, under the pen-name Ianthe, to popular periodicals. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, financial and legal papers, notebooks and albums, photographs, and printed matter related to Embury and her family. Writings include poetry and prose with original manuscript of Guido, A Tale and Other Poems.
