Obadiah Rich (1783?-1850) was an American book dealer who dealt extensively in Americana. In 1844 he bought Henri Ternaux de Compans's collection of American early printed books and manuscripts, then sold it through Henry Stevens to James Lenox in 1848. Collection consists of negative photostats of letters and accounts, original printed catalogs, and a photostat of an annotated catalog. Letters (from Obadiah Rich to Henry Stevens) and accounts concern the sale of rare books and manuscripts to James Lenox, John Carter Brown, the British Museum and others. Writings and research files include manuscripts of Eames's work, research notes, correspondence, and printed matter relating to subject areas and to works by Eames. Bibliographic notes contain cut and pasted titles, typed citations, handwritten notes, correspondence and clippings. Booksellers series, ca. 1879-1937, reflects Eames's long and varied involvement in the book trade with materials such as correspondence, bills, sales catalogs, booklists, and publication notices. New York Public Library/Lenox Library papers, ca. 1883-1935, include lists of holdings (rare books, maps, etc.) prepared by Eames, reports on Library activities by Eames, Library printed matter, clippings, and miscellaneous papers. Personal/family papers, 1850-1937, contain diaries, expense books, legal and estate papers, papers relating to Eames's private library, biographical and genealogical information, family correspondence, and memorabilia. Dr. Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919) was a renowned surgeon and early collector of American manuscripts of the revolutionary era. His collection was purchased by John S. Kennedy and presented to The New York Public Library in 1896. Emmet's papers consist of correspondence and a small quantity of personal papers. Correspondence with Worthington C. Ford, letters to Walter R. Benjamin, and letters from Augustin Daly concern the purchase of manuscripts; letters to Albert Rosenthal relate to prints and portraits to be used as extra-illustrations in his books.
