In his early years, Julius Kahn was an actor who toured the country with Joseph Jefferson's troupe, as well as others. Later, Kahn became a lawyer, and represented California for more than twenty years in the House of Representatives as Republican Congressman. After Kahn died in office in December 1924, his wife Florence ran for his seat and won, becoming the first Jewish woman to serve as a Representative. Consists of two letters concerning theater matters written by 27 year-old actor Julius Kahn to his lodge brother MacKay, whose full name is not known. Kahn writes of his association with actor/manager Joseph Jefferson, and tells anecdotes of Jefferson's generosity and kindness, which he contrasts with other managers under whom he has worked.
