Jon Stone winner of 18 Emmy awards for his work in television was the writer of the Captain Kangaroo program. Captain Kangaroo began in 1955 and was an award winner program for children. The scripts span the years 1959 to 1964. There are some gaps.

Biographical/historical information

Jon Stone, who won 18 Emmy Awards for his work in television, was the writer, producer and director of Captain Kangaroo, and later wrote the pilot script for Sesame Street and was the original head writer and one of the three original producers of that program. He remained the principal director of Sesame Street until a year before his death in 1997. "His reputation was that he was probably the most brilliant writer of children's television material in America," said Joan Ganz Cooney, a founder of the Children's Television Workshop, in his obituary published in the New York Times.

Scope and arrangement

Captain Kangaroo, CBS's award-winning series for children, began in 1955. The hour-long program aimed at a pre-school audience ran every weekday morning as well as on Saturdays and successfully combined education and entertainment. The collection consists of bound typescripts, incomplete, that include light and sound cues, props, and notations on timing, some handwritten. Dates covered are November 2, 1959 to October 23, 1964 for the weekday show with gaps: March 21, 1960-August 5, 1960 and May 13, 1961-July 23, 1961. Saturdays are complete from October 31, 1959-September 19, 1964.
