Annie Hart was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts circa 1860. A star of both vaudeville and Tony Pastor's Theater, she spent most of her life in the entertainment field. She first appeared in THE BLACK CROOK at Niblo's Gardens. She toured both in the United States and the British Isles.Among the productions in which she appeared was the 1928 production of Jerome Kern's SHOW BOAT. After she retired from the theater she resided in New Jersey with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Marsh, also of the entertainment world. She died in Fair Haven, New Jersey in 1947. The Annie Hart Papers and Scrapbook contain photographs and clippings of family and friends in the 1920's and 1930's. Many photographs in the scrapbook are of Annie Hart, Helen Morgan, Howard Marsh and his wife, Marian Marsh. Correspondence is from notables of vaudeville and musical theater of the early 20th century.

Scope and arrangement

The Annie Hart papers and scrapbooks are arranged in four series:

  • Series I. Personal Papers

    This series consists of personal photographs and ephemera of Annie Hart's personal life. Ephemera includes membership cards, wedding invitations, a wallet (photos of parents were removed, placed in acid free envelope and included in the personal photograph folder) and pamphlets.

  • Series II. Correspondence

    This series consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence primarily from business and personal friends. Of special note is correspondence from Joe Laurie, Jr.

  • Series III. Professional Papers

    This series consists of clippings, press releases, publicity materials and the side for the part of the landlady (Ms. Hart's part) in SHOWBOAT. Most of the materials relate to SHOW BOAT or members of the SHOW BOAT cast.

  • Series IV. Scrapbooks

    This series consists of two scrapbooks. The first is a clipping scrapbook from the 1930s concerning Annie Hart's career, the second contains primarily photographs of Howard and Marion Marsh, their home in Rumson New Jersey and Howard Marsh's nightclub in West Orange, The Mayfair Club.
