Scope and arrangement
This collection contains compositions of Samuel Baldwin. Only a handful of his works are dated so it is difficult to establish a chronology of his compositional output. A majority of works appear to have been composed before the turn of the century. Baldwin's cantata The Celestial country was given a premiere performance in 1902, though its composition might have several years earlier. Baldwin generally wrote symphonic or choral works. An exception to this preference is his string quartet in D minor, written late in his composing career, while he was active as an organist and teacher. It is not known whether this work received performances during Baldwin's lifetime.
