Biographical/historical information
Amelia Kemper Ton Ende, a lecturer, writer, translator and editor of Polish-French descent, was born in 1856 in Poland. Fluent in English as well as Polish, German and French and trained in the United States Ms. Von Ende was a contributor to prominent periodicals and traveled widely the during the 19th&& 20th centuries lecturing and presenting lecture-courses on such subjects as "German Women Writers", "Woman in Music", "Poland, Old & New", "Post-war Literature at home and abroad" and "Three Centuries of French Thought." She devoted her energies between 1905 and 1922 not only to lecturing in the United States for various women's societies and at such academic institutions as Wellesley College, Mt. Holyoke, and Northwestern University, but also to publishing works she had written, edited or translated. Among those works is "New York. An Interpretation" (ca. 1909, Berlin), translations of George Clemenceau's Au Pied du Sinai (At the foot of Sinai 1922, N. Y.) and Carl Hauptmann's Kreig-ein Tedeum (War, a Tedeum; 19l6, Chicago) and an edited version of Poems by Egbert W. Fowler (1905, Boston), the latter three of which are among the holdings of the New York Public Library. During this same period she made her home in New York City where, apparently, she died in 1932. The personal papers of Amelia von Ende consist primarily of typescripts of her writings, lecture notes, translations, musical compositions, scrapbooks of clippings, travel notes, her publicity materials, notebooks, a few incoming letters and one volume of original verse from Ludwig Weinstein to Henry von Ende.
