Edwin Augustus Stevens (1795-1868) was an American engineer and inventor. In 1838, Stevens and his brother Robert designed and constructed the first iron-clad naval vessel in the nation, the Stevens Battery. Although never completed, the Stevens Battery laid the groundwork for modern naval warships The collection consists of a printed copy of a memorial to Congress from Edwin A. Stevens regarding Stevens Battery; correspondence with the executors of Stevens' estate; Plans, specifications, and drawings for completion of the ship; and an agreement between commissioners for the state of New Jersey and executors of Stevens' estate for the sale of the ship
