Collection consists mainly of correspondence between British-born American painter John William (J.W.) Hill and various friends and family members, including Gordon Lester Ford and his wife, Emily Ellsworth (Fowler) Ford. Letters discuss social and family matters, as well as the creation and sale of his work. Also included are canceled checks, receipts, order slips from the Brooklyn Art Association, a biographical note, and clippings, largely related to Hill's death in 1879
