Henry Albert Phillips (1880-1951) was an American author, editor and lecturer. He was associate editor of several magazines and lectured in New York City between 1909 and 1918. His extensive travels were the basis for numerous books and articles. He was a feature writer for the New York Herald Tribune from 1928 to 1933 and covered Italy and Eastern Europe during World War II. Collection consists of correspondence, writings and photographs. Correspondence, 1897-1945, is with literary and theatrical persons and concern mainly the publication of manuscripts. Writings are by Phillips and others and include poems. Also, photographs of Phillips and his friends.

Biographical/historical information

Henry Albert Phillips (1880-1951) author, editor and lecturer, born in Brooklyn, New York to Henry Albert and Addie A. (stanhope) Phillips. He was associate editor between 1909-1910 to the Metropolitan Magazine and the Motion Picture Magazine. Phillips lectured at the Brooklyn Academy of Arts and the Young Mens Christian Association, 1916-18. He also travelled extensively abroad to Europe and the Far East, Japan, china Manchurai and Korea to write about for articles and books. Phillips also studied economic/social conditions in the caribbean, mexico and south America. Between 1928-33 he wrote "travelling with the news" as feature writer for the New York Herald Tribune. During World War II, Phillips covered Italy Eastern Europe e. g. Yugoslavia, Rumania, Bukowina and Hungary

Philips literary contributions include: The Photodrama (1914) Other peoples' lives (1924), Meet the Japanese (1932) Brazil-Bulwark of the inter-American Relations (1945). He died Jan. 28, 1951 and is buried at East Morichas, Long island NY. Phil lips married Margaret w. Shepard and has one son Robert Henry Shepard Phillips.

Scope and arrangement

The collection consists of correspondence 1897-1945; n. d. both incoming and outgoing mainly to Phillips and the majority of correspondents are literary figures e. g. writers, poets and individuals involved with theatres and movies. Many concern publications of their manuscripts with Phillips as associate editor of magazines e. g. Metropolitan Magazine. A few regard Phillips attempts to have his manuscripts accepted by magazines and theatres. Among his correspondents are Walter Lynwood Fleming S. W. Ferguson, Emmett c. king Harris Merton Lyon, Helen Varick Boswell, Richardson Wright, George Ethelbert Walsh, Edward Mott Wooley and Howard F Randolph. The remaining part of the collection are writings: Poems, a few by writers and Photographs of Maibelle H. Justice, Katherine Kavanaugh and Joseph Franklin Poland.
