The National Advisory Council on Radio in Education, Inc. (NACRE) was an organization formed in 1929 to promote radio as an educational medium. Levering Tyson was director from 1930 to 1937. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, and printed matter. Materials include general correspondence with members of NACRE, organizations and corporations; applications for membership and approvals; and Tyson's correspondence with radio stations throughout the U.S.

Biographical/historical information

The National Advisory Council on Radio in Education, Inc. (NACRE), was an organization formed to promote education via radio. During most of the time span of the records, 1929-1941, the NACRE was headed by the Director, Levering Tyson (1889-?), between the years 1930-1937.

The NACRE is organized through a Director, Executive Board, Executive Committee, Members of Council, Officers and Associate members. The NACRE promoted education by radio through its contacts with various organizations and corporations, i. e. The American Association for Adult Education; The American Library Association. Also, the NACE kept in contact with radio stations across the country, notably those which had educational programs on their agenda.

Funding in part, was from the Carnegie Corporation which endowed them sporadically

The National Advisory Council on Radio in Education (NACRE), consists of correspondence, memos, reports, minutes and printed material. The material focuses on education via radio.

The National Advisory Council on Radio in Education records are arranged in four series:

  • Series 1. General Correspondence

    Organized by year (s) alphabetically arranged. The incoming correspondence is to the Director, Levering Tyson. Correspondence is mainly from members, organizations and corporations, i. e. American Association for Adult Education; American Council on Education; American Library Association; American School of the Air; British Broadcasting Corporation; Federal Communication Commission; National Broadcasting Corporation. There is also, a scattering of correspondence from Europe and Asia and some subject correspondence.

  • Series 2. Associate Membership correspondence

    Consists of applications for memberships and approvals.

  • Series 3. Broadcasting Stations

    Tyson's correspondence with radio stations across the country.

  • Series 4. Clippings
