Scope and arrangement
The collection consists of material pertaining almost exclusively to Johnston's work and interest in the fields of typography and book design. Included are correspondence with publishers and book designers concerning specific projects and publications, writings, samples of his work ranging from designs for a completed bookjacket, mockups and lettering, articles on typography, printing history, and manuscript preparation. There is also printed material consisting of a few journals, monographs, and dummies and from correspondents include Elmer Adler, Bennett A. Cerf, Burton Emmett, W. A. Dwiggins, Desmond Flower, Eric Gill, Dard Hunter, George Macy, Francis Meynell, Oliver Simon, and D. B. Updike.
