The Theodore M. Banta Genealogical Notes comprise correspondence, handwritten transcriptions, several clippings, and a large bound notebook relating to his family history.

Biographical/historical information

Theodore M. Banta was born on November 23, 1834 in New York City. He attended the College of the City of New York in its infancy in 1849. He joined New York Life around 1857, performing actuarial duties, and became cashier in 1864. Some thirty years later, Banta brought charges of unethical practices by the company’s president. Banta retired from New York Life in 1891.

He married Cornelia Crane (date uncertain) and they had two daughters, May and Effie. Banta was also a Municipal Civil Service Commissioner for New York City from 1902 to 1903. He was a member of the Holland Society, Huguenot Society, as well as the National Arts Club and the Arkwright Club. He died at his home in Glenbrook, Connecticut on September 17, 1910.

Scope and arrangement

The Theodore M. Banta Genealogical Notes consist of correspondence, handwritten transcriptions, a few clippings, and a large bound notebook of handwritten genealogical information relating to his family. The notebook is organized by family name (although not alphabetically) and includes a list of family names with page numbers on the inside cover.

Family names included in the notes are Astor (John Jacob), Bonnell (Bunnell), Coutant, Cuvilje (Ariantje), De Groot, DesMarets (DesMarest), Dickerson (Dickenson, Dickinson), Dyckman, Edwards, Golden (Golding, Goulding), Hegeman, Hendrickson, Heroy, Rayner (Rainer), Romejn, Romer, Spock, Squier (Squire), Sturges, Tallman, Vandervoort, Van Hoorn (Van Horen).
