The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) was founded in March 1987 at the Lesbian and Gay Community Center in New York City's Greenwich Village as an organization devoted to direct action (demonstrations and civil disobedience) to call the attention of government officials, scientists, drug companies and other corporations, and the general public to the severity of the AIDS crisis and its impact on the lives of individuals. Records of the organization consist of administrative files, minutes, correspondence, records of demonstrations, financial documents, chapter and committee records, subject files, conference notes and programs, published and near-print materials, ephemera, fliers and handbills, photographs, artifacts, posters and placards documenting the organization's efforts.

The Aaron Diamond Foundation was a philanthropic foundation in New York City established by Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Diamond for the purpose of serving the public interest. From 1986 until its termination in 1996 the Foundation awarded financial grants to a broad range of charitable and non-profit organizations in various fields including education, bio-medical research, public health, social welfare, human rights, and the performing arts. Most of the grantee organizations were located in New York City. The bulk of the collection consists of grant files arranged alphabetically by year which record the awarding and administration of financial grants to charitable and non-profit organizations in the fields of medical research, education and culture mainly in New York City who appealed to the Foundation for funds for general support or for special projects and programs. The files include correspondence of the executive director with grantee organizations; copies of proposals and other documents including annual reports, auditors' reports, newsletters and miscellaneous printed matter submitted by grantees in support of their requests for funds; and documents relating to the administration of the grants including grant agreement letters, interim and final reports, internal memoranda, grant data worksheets, and other records. Included also are minutes of the Foundation's board of directors; and miscellaneous records including a chronological file of grant agreement letters sent; and a file of correspondence of the executive director acknowledging and rejecting requests for financial aid.

Jerome Alexander (1876-1959) was the pre-eminent American scientist in the field of colloidal chemistry, the study of substances neither in suspension nor solution, which was pertinent to many other areas of chemistry. In addition to translating a seminal work in the field, Richard Zsigmondy's Colloids and the Ultra-Microscope, he wrote Colloid Chemistry (1919), and edited and contributed to Colloid Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical, the seven-volume standard work in the field. He also published poetry and essays. Collection consists of correspondence, 1880-1953, primarily letters exchanged with chemists and physicists, including many Nobel Prize winners, concerning their contributions to Colloid Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical. Robert Jackson Alexander (1918- ) earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1950, and has taught economics at Rutgers University since 1947. His field of specialization, on which he has written frequently, is labor movements in Central and South America. During his extensive travels through the Americas, Jackson conducted interviews with politicians, labor leaders, diplomats, workers, businessmen, educators, and persons from all walks of life. Alexander wrote summaries of his interviews and recorded the substance of the conversations. He used the same procedure to record interviews in the United States and other countries. Collection consists primarily of carbon copies of Alexander's interview summaries. The vast majority of the interviews concern Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Interviews conducted between 1946-1956 are arranged by country with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela being particularly prominent. The rest of the interviews are arranged chronologically. Interviews concerning Central and South America cover a wide range of topics but concentrate on the labor movement and political developments. Other interviews have the same focus but those concerning the United States pertain to socialist parties as well. Also, typescripts of some of Alexander's writings.

By the 1920s, Knopf was publishing major American authors yet continued to publish important European authors as well. Knopf was renowned not only for its impressive list of authors but for the quality of its book production. The firm was acquired by Random House in 1960. Collection contains correspondence, manuscript records, readers' reports, press clippings of reviews, press releases, and typescripts of books published by Knopf. Knopf's correspondence, 1914-1951, consists primarily of letters to and from Knopf authors regarding publication of their work or that of other writers in the same field of expertise. Manuscript records and readers' reports, 1930-1947, include brief plot summaries and readers' opinions. Manuscript rejection correspondence, 1939-1943, contains letters from authors submitting manuscripts, and standard rejection letters from Knopf's editorial staff. Children's Department records, 1952-1961, of rejected manuscripts include short summaries and evaluations. Files of press clippings, 1930s to 1950s, of reviews of Knopf books also contain some sample book jackets and press releases. In addition to typescripts, 1937-1944, of books published by Knopf, series includes galleys and page proofs.

Edward Alfred Allworth (1920-2016), a specialist on ethnic minority populations in former Soviet Central Asia, was a professor of Turco-Soviet Studies in the Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures Department at Columbia University. The Edward Allworth papers, spanning 1934 to 2012, document his interest in and research on ethnic minority groups and the question of nationality in Soviet Central Asia and on the Soviet conflict in Afghanistan, as well as the drama and theater of Central Asian cultures. Populations represented in the collection are Crimean Tatars, Uzbeks, Tajiks and Bukharan Jews. The collection contains correspondence, writings, interview transcripts, research notes, citations, statistical analyses, photographs, biographical scrapbooks, printed matter, artifacts, and oral history and audio recordings. They also hold a small file of personal papers and a memoir.

The American Movement for World Government (AMWG), a not-for-profit organization incorporated in 1954, was founded by William H.D. Cox, Jr. to promote the establishment of federal world government as a necessary condition for world peace and security. Its methods have centered on educational programs, media campaigns, distribution of literature, and contact with groups such as the World Federalists Association and others working for related global interests, including nuclear disarmament, United Nations reform, and human rights. Notable supporters represented in the papers include Isaac Asimov, Ed Asner, Ellsworth T. Carrington, Carl Sagan and Edith Wynner. Carmel Kussman, a psychotherapist, was a board member and officer of the AMWG. The records document the founding and growth of the American Movement for World Government, including its day-to-day operations, media efforts, networking activities and general goals. The collection contains records of the Board of the Directors; correspondence of founder William H.D. Cox and executive director William W. Kenney; and financial and legal records. Press releases, correspondence, advertising, photographs, publications and membership records document outreach efforts, media campaigns, and publicity events. Printed matter contains publications concerning nuclear disarmament, world government, world peace and human rights. The American Educational Theatre Association, was formed in 1936 by a group of drama teachers to encourage high standards of teaching, production and scholarship; to disseminate information concerning developments in the theatre; and to initiate and support national legislation. Membership was composed of teachers, actors, students, directors, and other people involved in educational theatre. Known later as the American Theatre Association, the organization developed and published materials for use in childrens, school, college and university, and community theatres; promoted touring theatre groups; and stimulated creative activity and scholarship in educational theatre and allied fields. Records of the Association consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, directories, application forms, and printed matter with some materials of other organizations involved with the ATA. Presidential papers, 1949-1956, cover the administrations of Hubert Heffner, Monroe Lippman, Lee Mitchell, William P. Halstead, Barnard Hewitt, Horace Robinson, and Frank Whitney.
