Henry Adams (1838-1918) was an American historian, novelist, and critic. The collection consists of twenty-eight autograph letters signed by Henry Adams, 1871-1899; his undated autograph memoranda on the art of writing biography (4 p.); transcripts of letters to, from, and about Henry Adams made by Worthington C. Ford relating to his work The Letters of Henry Adams, 1867-1917; clippings and note concerning Henry Adams, 1938; and miscellaneous letters, including eight letters to Ford from various correspondents regarding Ford's book and Henry Adams, and one letter from Frances Adams to Mrs. Lowes, 1920-1937. The Henry Adams autograph letters, excepting letters to Samuel J. Tilden (9 Nov. 1871), and Mrs. Gordon Lester Ford (30 Mar. 1886), are written to Paul Leicester Ford and his brother Worthington Chauncey Ford, 1886-1899, the bulk to the latter in his capacity as Chief of the Bureau of Economic Statistics in Washington, D.C., discussing contemporary U.S. economic conditions. less

Leo Adams (1903- ) was a management executive with R.H. Macy & Co. in New York City from 1930 to 1965. Before Macy's he worked in the early motion picture theaters in Chicago and New York. Collection consists of Adams's correspondence, photographs and poetry. Correspondence is with friends and concerns the personal lives, cultural pursuits and careers of Adams and his circle during the Depression, World War II and post-war eras. Some letters pertain to the homosexual relationships of Adams and others and reflect gay life of the times. Also, a few photographs of Adams and typescript booklet of poetry. less

Corrections and additions to William Davenport Adams's Dictionary of the Drama, comprised of 24 volumes in 10 slipcases. Robert Adamson served as the Secretary to the Mayor of New York City, William Jay Gaynor. The folder mostly contains correspondence from 1910 addressed to Mr. Adamson. Many of the letters commend him for his bravery during the shooting of Mayor Gaynor in August, 1910. Other correspondence is from John L. Heaton and Job E. Hedges. There is one letter signed by Mr. Adamson regarding the transfer of donations to the Red Cross for the victims of the sinking of the Titanic. less

American social worker, author and advocate of international peace. Won the Nobel Peace prize in 1931. The folder contains two letters written by Jane Addams, one of which is dated Mary 27, 1902. Also included is an invitation to a ceremony posthumously honoring Jane Addams on May 19, 1968 at NYU addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Hill. less

American author and playwright. The folder contains three letters from George Ade. The letter dated June 18, 1901 to Mr. Seymour Eaton is an acceptance of his request to write on "How to travel in Europe." The other two letters are to The Players; one acknowledging his honorary membership on June 10, 1936 and the second informing The Players that he will not be able to visit their New York clubhouse on May 29, 1937. less

George Bliss Agnew (1868-1941) was a New York City businessman and politician. The collection consists mainly of political correspondence that includes letters from constituents, associates, and others interested in the outcome of bills before the New York State Legislature. less

Jerome Alexander (1876-1959) was the pre-eminent American scientist in the field of colloidal chemistry, the study of substances neither in suspension nor solution, which was pertinent to many other areas of chemistry. In addition to translating a seminal work in the field, Richard Zsigmondy's Colloids and the Ultra-Microscope, he wrote Colloid Chemistry (1919), and edited and contributed to Colloid Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical, the seven-volume standard work in the field. He also published poetry and essays. Collection consists of correspondence, 1880-1953, primarily letters exchanged with chemists and physicists, including many Nobel Prize winners, concerning their contributions to Colloid Chemistry: Theoretical and Practical. Correspondents include Mario Ascoli, W. Bancroft, W.M. Bayless, Lord Beaverbrook, Sir William Henry Bragg, Sir William Lawrence Bragg, C. Bridges, A.H. Compton, P. Debye, Albert Einstein, H. Robert Jackson Alexander (1918- ) earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1950, and has taught economics at Rutgers University since 1947. His field of specialization, on which he has written frequently, is labor movements in Central and South America. During his extensive travels through the Americas, Jackson conducted interviews with politicians, labor leaders, diplomats, workers, businessmen, educators, and persons from all walks of life. Alexander wrote summaries of his interviews and recorded the substance of the conversations. He used the same procedure to record interviews in the United States and other countries. Collection consists primarily of carbon copies of Alexander's interview summaries. The vast majority of the interviews concern Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Interviews conducted between 1946-1956 are arranged by country with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela being particularly prominent. The rest of the interviews are arranged chronologically. Interviews concerning Central and South America cover a wide range of topics but concentrate on the labor movement and political developments. Other interviews have the same focus but those concerning the United States pertain to socialist parties as well. Also, typescripts of some of Alexander's writings. less

Dean Alfange (1897-1989) was a lawyer, politician and political advisor to U.S. presidents and New York governors. He was instrumental in the formation of the Liberal Party, active in the Greek-American communtiy, and involved in human rights issues. The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, newsclippings, and other materials documenting his career. less

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., founded in 1915 by Alfred A. Knopf (1892-1984), started by publishing translations of Russian and European works. By the 1920s, Knopf was publishing major American authors yet continued to publish important European authors as well. Knopf was renowned not only for its impressive list of authors but for the quality of its book production. The firm was acquired by Random House in 1960. Collection contains correspondence, manuscript records, readers' reports, press clippings of reviews, press releases, and typescripts of books published by Knopf. Knopf's correspondence, 1914-1951, consists primarily of letters to and from Knopf authors regarding publication of their work or that of other writers in the same field of expertise. Manuscript records and readers' reports, 1930-1947, include brief plot summaries and readers' opinions. Manuscript rejection correspondence, 1939-1943, contains letters from authors submitting manuscripts, and standard rejection letters from Knopf's editorial staff. Children's Department records, 1952-1961, of rejected manuscripts include short summaries and evaluations. Files of press clippings, 1930s to 1950s, of reviews of Knopf books also contain some sample book jackets and press releases. In addition to typescripts, 1937-1944, of books published by Knopf, series includes galleys and page proofs. less

The file consists of research notes, genealogies, and correspondence generated in the course of Frank Allaben's research into the Little family of Boston, particularly relating to Luther Little, born 1756 in Marshfield, Massachusetts, who served as a marine and privateer during the Revolutionary War. less
