Two contemporary manuscript copies of letters relating to the June 1836 case of criminal conversation with Caroline Norton brought against Lord Melbourne by George Norton. Both copies in the same clerical hand; paper bears a watermark date of 1836. Formerly housed in a later 19th century envelope marked in ink: "Hon. Mrs. P. A. Irby" (i.e., Augusta Cowell). The first page of one of the copies bears a penciled note at the top, possibly in the hand of Augusta Cowell: "Before the trial - Mr N[orton] at this period was jealous of Cap.n Fitzroy Campbell.".
