John Bell, Scottish surgeon and anatomist. The premier surgeon of Edinburgh for nearly twenty years, he left for Italy to recuperate after being thrown from a horse in 1817. Bell met the Shelleys in Rome in 1819 and had considerable contact with them thereafter, both professional and social. To his publisher : 1 autograph letter signed : [ca. 1799-1800] : (S'ANA 0547) : probably concerning his plans for his Principles of Surgery in Two Volumes (1801-6), first published by Cadell & Davies.
