George Washington (1732-1799) was a Virginia planter, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and first President of the United States. The Washington Papers comprise manuscript items by or related to George Washington and his family acquired by The New York Public Library and its predecessor the Lenox Library through various gifts and purchases. Among the items in the collection are Washington’s notebook as a colonel in the Virginia militia (1757), the manuscript of his Farewell Address to the nation (1796), and letters he sent and received, 1757-1799.

Records consist of general and family correspondence, personal papers, subject papers, writings and speeches, diaries and travel journals, financial records, papers of Bowker's father, Daniel Rogers Bowker, scrapbooks, photographs, printed matter, and memorabilia. General correspondence reflects R.R. Bowker's business affairs as well as his interest in tariff reform, free trade, copyright law, library science, civil service, and political reform. Other materials include family correspondence, 1857-1932; personal papers containing items such as childhood letters, school reports, family records, and letters of condolence; and subject papers relating to copyright, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., free trade and tariff reform, and his biography. Also, letterbooks for the period from 1875 to 1913; Bowker's writings and speeches; diaries, 1859-1932; and travel journals from the 1860s to 1926 for trips in the United States, the West Indies, Europe, the Near East, and around the world in 1898. Financial records include accounts for personal and some business expenses, bank books, cancelled checks, and personal ledgers, 1893-1910.

Emily Ford Skeel (1867-1958) was a bibliographer, editor and philanthropist. Her parents were Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891), a railroad and real-estate magnate and collector of Americana, and Emily Fowler Ford (1826-1893), a poet. Like her older brothers Worthington Chauncey Ford (1858-1941) and Paul Leicester Ford (1865-1902), Skeel did historical research and compiled bibliographies on Parson Weems and Noah Webster. She and her husband, Roswell Skeel, Jr. (1866-1922), contributed time and money to various organizations and causes concerned with social reform or environmental conservation. Collection consists of correspondence, notes, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter relating to Skeel's professional and personal activities. General correspondence, 1871-1958, includes letters about her bibliographic and editorial work as well as letters of Skeel and her husband with family and friends, librarians, archivists, and academics. There is correspondence with various organizations and societies concerned with social and educational issues and with the Single Tax measures of Henry George. Personal and family correspondence, 1871-1950, contains correspondence with family members, relatives and personal friends, and other correspondence that is personal in nature. Financial and household correspondence, 1913-1946, consists of letters with banks and stockbrokers, general business letters and correspondence from Skeel's years in Martha's Vineyard. Bibliographic notes are made up of material Skeel gathered for her work on Webster and original manuscript of the Webster bibliography. Minor series includes notes about Weems, memoranda, writings, student notebooks, personal and family papers with genealogical information, commonplace books, accounts and account books, and maps. Also, scrapbooks compiled by Emily and Roswell Skeel; photographs of family members and residences, prominent people and various other subjects; and printed matter, such as clippings, pamphlets, prints and ephemera.

Emily Ellsworth (Fowler) Ford was an educated nineteenth-century women who wrote prolifically from adolescence until her death in 1893. Her work was published in a variety of contemporary literary journals, magazines, and newspapers. She was the granddaughter of Noah Webster and wife of Gordon Lester Ford, a prominent businessman and lawyer, with whom she raised their seven children. Ford was involved in many charitable organizations around her home in Brooklyn and was well-known within social and literary circles. The collection consists of family and general correspondence, Ford's published and unpublished writing, notes and keepsakes, and a small number of photographs. The material spans parts of her childhood in Amherst through her death in 1893.

The collection consists of twenty-eight autograph letters signed by Henry Adams, 1871-1899; his undated autograph memoranda on the art of writing biography (4 p.); transcripts of letters to, from, and about Henry Adams made by Worthington C. Ford relating to his work The Letters of Henry Adams, 1867-1917; clippings and note concerning Henry Adams, 1938; and miscellaneous letters, including eight letters to Ford from various correspondents regarding Ford's book and Henry Adams, and one letter from Frances Adams to Mrs. Lowes, 1920-1937. The Henry Adams autograph letters, excepting letters to Samuel J. Tilden (9 Nov. 1871), and Mrs. Gordon Lester Ford (30 Mar. 1886), are written to Paul Leicester Ford and his brother Worthington Chauncey Ford, 1886-1899, the bulk to the latter in his capacity as Chief of the Bureau of Economic Statistics in Washington, D.C., discussing contemporary U.S. economic conditions.

The collection contains letters to Justin Winsor, as Superintendent of the Boston Public Library, from other librarians and Albany publisher Joel Munsell, relative to the purchase and exchange of listed books and periodicals, 1869-1874, with two letters to his predecessor Charles Coffin Jewett on the same subject, 1866-1867. Winsor's letters to Gordon L. Ford, Worthington C. Ford, and Paul L. Ford, 1887-1892, concern historical and bibliographical matters, as does a copy of Charles Deane's letter to Justin Winsor of 1877 March 10, with Winsor's related note to George Henry Moore (1823-1892) copied below it. A few invoices and receipts for publications, and Winsor's completed questionnaire for Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography, 1888, are also present.

Correspondence, 1866-1937, includes both business and personal correspondence, mostly incoming, with librarians, booksellers and bibliographers regarding bibliographic questions, sales information, exchange of photostats, and comparisons of editions. Writings and research files include manuscripts of Eames's work, research notes, correspondence, and printed matter relating to subject areas and to works by Eames. Bibliographic notes contain cut and pasted titles, typed citations, handwritten notes, correspondence and clippings. Booksellers series, ca. 1879-1937, reflects Eames's long and varied involvement in the book trade with materials such as correspondence, bills, sales catalogs, booklists, and publication notices. New York Public Library/Lenox Library papers, ca. 1883-1935, include lists of holdings (rare books, maps, etc.) prepared by Eames, reports on Library activities by Eames, Library printed matter, clippings, and miscellaneous papers. Personal/family papers, 1850-1937, contain diaries, expense books, legal and estate papers, papers relating to Eames's private library, biographical and genealogical information, family correspondence, and memorabilia. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes and transcripts, student notes and notebooks, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, miscellaneous papers, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1862-1938, is between Ford and historians, librarians, scholars, writers, publishers, booksellers, and lawyers, including extensive correspondence with Charles Francis Adams, Henry Cabot Lodge, James Ford Rhodes, and John Franklin Jameson. Family correspondence, 1870-1935, is chiefly incoming letters from many members of Ford's family. Most of the writings are drafts or hand-written manuscripts for works which Ford authored or edited and are concerned with American history and economics. Notes and transcripts are comprised of numerous transcripts of historical letters and other documents with research notes, annotated printed matter, and notebooks (some from Ford's student days.) Diaries, 1873-1918, contain brief entries concerning Ford's activities, and scrapbooks, ca. 1898-1931, consist mostly of clippings and other materials on a particular subject. Photographs are of Ford family members and of various personal and public subjects. Miscellaneous papers include personal papers, writings by individuals other than Ford, records of organizations with which he was affiliated, genealogical documents and biographical sketches of the Fowler and Chauncey families, financial accounts, and ephemera.
