The Stephen Donaldson Papers document the varied career and tumultuous personal history of the writer and activist. The date span of the papers is 1965-1998. Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

Collection consists mainly of correspondence and professional papers reflecting Ballard's life as a gay man, both in military and civilian life, and his work as a museum curator. Correspondents include Ballard's friends, family, classmates, and colleagues. Also included is correspondence (1944-1945) from Lockett Ford Ballard, Sr. to his sister, Margaret, and to his mother while he was convalescing from wounds received while serving with the U.S. 3rd Army in France. Professional papers relate to his graduate school work, and to his work at the Litchfield Historical Society and the Old State Capitol Restoration Project. The Glenn Carrington Papers document the personal life of an African-American homosexual from the 1920's to the 1960's, before the advent of the gay pride movement. Among Carrington's friends and acquaintances were Alain Locke; sociologist Ophelia Settles Egypt, a fellow student at Howard University; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana, grandson of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and a "surrogate" mother to Carrington, Georgia Douglas Johnson. There is correspondence related to Carrington's position as a parole officer and as a psychological social worker. Many of the young men Carrington counseled remained friends with him throughout his life and frequently corresponded with him. The correspondence between Carrington and the young men is included in the collection. There is also correspondence with Carrington's gay male friends. less

The Gilbert Price collection consists primarily of printed material. The collection contains several drafts of a biographical essay about Price written by Allen Warren Smith, a close friend and business associate, and administrative records of Variety Recording Studios, which Smith directed, relating to the Price's career. There are also programs and playbills for productions in which Price held a leading role, newspaper clippings and reviews about Price, along with a ledger of his personal finances kept by Smith. Included is material relating to the planning of the memorial service for Price, held on February 5, 1991 at the Actors Chapel, St. Malachy's Roman Catholic Church and obituaries. less
