The Walter Winchell papers span 1920-1967 and consist of annotated radio scripts, correspondence, miscellaneous scripts for stage and film, scrapbooks, news articles, clippings from his newspaper columns, and other items related to his journalism career. The largest portion of the collection is the radio scripts, usually typewritten and annotated, which date from 1930 to 1959; because of their fragile condition, these scripts are available only on microfilm. Film scripts include two to which Winchell contributed, BROADWAY THROUGH A KEYHOLE (1933) and WAKE UP AND LIVE (1937), the latter of which provided an opportunity for Winchell to play himself. Winchell's correspondents included Fanny Brice, Samuel Goldwyn, and Billy Rose. Clippings cite Winchell's role in public controversies, such as the battle over racism at New York's Stork Club which pitted Winchell against entertainer Josephine Baker, and Winchell's accusations of Communist sympathies made against various public figures during the McCarthyist 1950s. less

Set and costume designer Raoul Pène Du Bois (1914-1985) was born on Staten Island, New York. His career began in his teens and spanned some six decades, during which he designed for theater, film, dance, and other live productions. Du Bois received two Tony Awards for his set designs for Wonderful town (1953), and his costume designs for No, no, Nanette (1971). He died at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, following a stroke. Original color drawings mostly of costume designs, but also set designs and detail drawings by Raoul Pène Du Bois. Many of the designs are for the musical Jumbo, music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Lorenz Hart (Hippodrome Theatre, 1935), with masks by Wynn; several designs are initialed and dated "JR 35" and are possibly by James Reynolds who also designed costumes for this production. Other productions represented are Call me madam, music and lyrics by Irving Berlin (Imperial Theatre, 1950); Carmen Jones, music by Georges Bizet, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein (Broadway Theatre, 1943); Doctor jazz, music by Buster Davis and Luther Henderson, lyrics by Buster Davis (Winter Garden Theatre, 1975); The firebrand of Florence, music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Ira Gershwin (Alvin Theatre, 1945); Irene, music by Harry Tierney, lyrics by Joseph McCarthy (Minskoff Theatre, 1973); The music man, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson (Majestic Theatre, 1957); No, no, Nanette, music by Vincent Youmans, lyrics by Irving Caesar and Otto Harbach (46th Street Theatre, 1971); The student gypsy, music and lyrics by Rick Besoyan (54th Street Theatre, 1963). The Richard Barr-Clinton Wilder Papers contain a great deal of documentation on the working aspects of the collaboration between Barr, Wilder and Edward Albee whose various producing units helped to establish a number of important American playwrights in the 1960s. In addition they document the work that Barr did with Charles Woodward, Jr. after Wilder left the Playwrights Unit as well as the work done by Barr and Wilder before they formed their partnership. The Administrative Files and Production series contain correspondence; production files, such as contracts, agreements, cast and crew lists, inventories, schedules, costume plots, and lighting plots; some scripts; programs; legal papers; business papers and clippings. The bulk of the documents, however, are financial records including royalty statements, box office statements, ledgers, bank statements, invoices and receipts. The more personal papers in the collection including writings, photographs and ephemera document Richard Barr's life and work. There are no similar items documenting the life of Clinton Wilder.
