Renowned Russian translator and Soviet culture lecturer Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood (1894-1974) is best known as the English translator for Konstantin Stanislavsky, the actor, director, and dramatics coach for the Moscow Art Theatre. The collection consists of correspondence in English, Russian, French, Italian and German; articles; photographs; and scrapbooks. There is a document in the collection that predates Mrs. Hapgood's birthdate. The collection contains voluminous correspondence from Konstantin Stanislavsky's associates and family, although there is no correspondence from Stanislavsky himself. less

The collection documents both the long-time correspondence between James Belden and Lillian Gish and his admiration for her which is illustrated in his documentation of her career. The correspondence spans the years 1936 to 1991 and contains many of Gish's opinions and insights into the world of the theater and her tastes in literature. Consists of letters and cards written by Lillian Gish to her friend Dorothy Hanson between 1956 and 1982, two news clippings, a photograph of Lillian Gish and her sister Dorothy which was autographed by Dorothy, and a program from a Dartmouth Film Society tribute to Lillian Gish. Although one of her notes speaks of attending the premiere of her 1978 film for Robert Altman, A WEDDING, Lillian Gish's notes to her friend Dorothy Hanson are generally brief and include little or no information related to her career. less

The Lucy Kroll correspondence from Lillian Gish consists of 62 letters written by Lillian Gish to her agent, Lucy Kroll. The correspondence spans the 1960's through the 1980's and contains information on Lillian Gish's career and personal life. There is also much information on Dororthy Gish, especially concerning her failing health. Of special note is the correspondence regarding Lillian Gish's work on the motion picture THE COMEDIANS, directed by Peter Glenville. less

Actor Richard Barthelmess formed Inspiration Pictures to make Tol'able David (1921). He founded the Inspiration Company along with Charles H. Duell and Henry King. Inspiration Pictures was located in Los Angeles, California. Collection consists of 96 albums of black and white photographs and press books of clippings for films produced by Inspiration Pictures in the 1920s. The amateur gentleman (ca. 1926), The bond boy (ca. 1922), The bright shawl (ca. 1923), Fury (ca. 1923), Ranson's folly (ca. 1926), Romola (1924), and The white sister (1923) are especially well-documented. There is also one press book of material on actress Lillian Gish, who appeared in The white sister (1923) and Romola (1924), produced by Inspiration Pictures. less

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less

Donehue was a director working primarily for the New York stage and television in the 1950s and 1960s. He also directed two films in Hollywood. The collection includes personal correspondence; production files containing notes, letters, partial scripts, cast lists, contracts and financial papers; complete scripts, many for television shows; clippings of reviews; and a few manuscripts and photographs. less

The George DeMott papers consist of correspondence, some diaries/appointment books, contracts, photographs, and scrapbooks. This material is almost all business related, and there are no significant personal papers. The papers are divided into two distinct parts, with some overlap: items such as contracts and correspondence that relate to the career of Mr. DeMott, and items such as posters, brochures, etc., that he collected, and placed into scrapbooks. The section of the DeMott papers devoted to Booking Agencies and Agents (Series IV) is divided into 18 sub-series, and contains a great deal of correspondence detailing the difficulties George DeMott and his wife Fanny faced booking their act into schools. The scrapbooks comprise the bulk of the collection and contain a variety of items, including clippings, posters, brochures, correspondence, handbills, fliers, photographs, and programs. The bulk of the material spans 1926 to 1947, and consists of photographs, and clippings of Benney's work depicting New York stage performers in their roles. Many photographs and clippings depict entire stage scenes, and, in addition to stage actors, there are photographs and clippings of musicians, dancers, comics, and radio personalities, and a small number of items relating to films of the period. less

The Romney Brent papers document his career and contain correspondence, photographs and two scrapbooks. The collection is incomplete in that it contains only correspondence from his later years and photographs and scrapbooks from his early career. Correspondents include: Ilka Chase, Helen Hayes, Lillebil Ibsen, Alfred Lunt, Armina Marshall, Mary Martin, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Emlyn Williams and Peggy Wood. There is a large gap in the materials for the 1940s and 1950s. Some production photographs were separated to the Theatre Collection photo files.
