Everett Pepperell Wheeler (1840-1925) was an American lawyer and civil service reformer. He was a founder of the New York Bar Association and served for seventeen years as chairman of the executive committee of the New York Civil Service Reform Association. Other organizations he supported were the Citizens Union, the Committee of Seventy, the Reform Club, and the Man Suffrage Association. Collection consists of correspondence, legal and real estate papers, articles, speeches, maps, photograph, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1882-1925, mainly concerns Wheeler's opinions on World War I, Armenian immigration, and womens suffrage. Other correspondence relates to the Citizens Union and the drive for efficient government for New York City, the American Bar Association, the League of Nations, tariff reform, and other topics of interest to Wheeler. Also, his speeches and articles, 1888-1924; maps of the New York area; photograph of Venice in 1882; and printed materials regarding the Citizens Union and political campaigns of 1880. less

John Foster Carr (1869-1939), lecturer and author, promoted the education and Americanization of immigrants, particularly Italian immigrants. He was founder and director of the Immigrant Publication Society; was active in the American Library Association (ALA), promoting the "Books for Everybody" campaign in New York City; and helped with the ALA's book drive for U.S. armed forces, ca. 1918-1920. He wrote a series of guides to the U.S. for Italian, Jewish and Polish immigrants; and wrote or edited other books and articles on immigration, libraries, Thomas Jefferson, and the Declaration of Independence. Collection contains correspondence, materials relating to "Books for Everybody" campaign, writings by Carr and his family, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1909-1940, concerns his activities as director of the Immigrant Publication Society, his series of guides for immigrants, speaking engagements, and personal and family matters. "Books for Everybody" materials include legal and financial records, notes, memoranda, and scrapbook of clippings. Writings by Carr consist of manuscripts and typescripts of his speeches on immigrants and Americanization, drafts of articles and projected biographies; galleys and printed copy of book by his wife Emma Lilian Dana; and manuscripts of sermons, 1801-1830, by his great grandfather, Rev. Sol Bloom (1870-1949) was a U.S. Congressman from New York City, 1923-1949, and served as chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, 1939-1949. Collection consists of Bloom's public papers as a member of Congress including case files, special bills, armed services academies files, and general correspondence; and personal miscellaneous papers. Bulk of the papers are case files containing correspondence with constituents seeking aid in the solution of problems requiring the intervention of a department or agency of the federal government. Some case files concern Jews and refugees in Europe and elsewhere who sought permission to emigrate to the United States before, during and after World War II. General correspondence is mainly ceremonial although some relates to public affairs and to matters pending before Congress. Francis Smith Belton (ca. 1791-1861) was a career officer in the U.S. Army who served in the Mexican War. He was married to Harriet Kirby Belton (1798-1873); their son Winfield Scott Belton (1820-1889) fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Collection consists of the papers of Francis Smith Belton, Harriet Kirby Belton, Winfield Scott Belton, and members of the Dawson, Kirby and Todd families who were related to the Beltons. Papers of Francis Smith Belton, 1818-1853, include correspondence with his wife, military papers (some are copies) and an autobiography. Papers of Harriet Kirby Belton, 1829-1854, consist mainly of correspondence with her husband during the period of the Mexican War. Winfield Scott Belton's papers, 1832-1887, include correspondence with his wife relating in part to his activities during the Civil War. Kirby family papers consist of correspondence of various family members. Dawson papers, ca. 1763-1813, include correspondence of Joshua Dawson who emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. Todd family papers, 1819-1861, contain correspondence concerning naval service and political and military events during the Mexican War. Other materials include family and legal papers, certificates of commission, 1859 log, commonplace book from 1835 to 1842, photographs of family members, clippings, and issues of various newspapers. less
