The Beeks family papers consist mainly of personal correspondence. Also included are manuscripts, a commonplace book, a few photographs, and other personal miscellany. The bulk of the material dates between 1899-1928, and includes a letterpress copybook documenting the law practice of James Beeks between 1899-1901; correspondence written to his wife, Sarah Jane Brackinridge Beeks during his business trip to Cuba in 1902; and the correspondence of his eldest son, Edward Beeks, while living in Shanghai from 1911-1928. Nicholas Kelley was a New York City lawyer and civic leader. He served as an assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 1918 to 1921 and later specialized in arbitration and labor law. Kelley was vice president of the Chrysler Corporation from 1937 to 1957 and served on the boards of such civic and social reform organizations as the National Consumers' League and the Visiting Nurse Service. The collection consists of professional and family correspondence, personal documents and ephemera related to Kelley's education at Harvard, his career as a lawyer in New York City, as assistant secretary in the Treasury Department, and his involvement with legal and civic reform organizations. less

Adolph Simon Ochs was an American newspaperman and the publisher of the New York Times for almost forty years, from 1896 to 1935. Under his leadership, the paper acquired an international reputation for objective and trustworthy reporting.
