This collection consists of typescripts of novels, biographies, essays, and poems on historical, sociological, and educational issues, and conference papers. Some of the typescripts appear as final drafts, others as working drafts with author's annotations and corrections. Manuscripts included are "A Talk to Teachers: The Negro Child, His Self Image" by James Baldwin; "Slavery and Capitalism" by Eric Williams; "Life in a Haitian Valley" by Melville J. Herskovits; "American Dilemma" by Gunnar Myrdal; and poems by Waring Cuney, among others. Other authors represented are Arna Bontemps, Horace Mann Bond, Lloyd Brown, Helen Buckler, Henrietta Buckmaster, John H. Clark, Benjamin Davis, Ralph Ellison, Arthur Huff Fauset, and E. Franklin Frazier. Conference material includes Melville J. Herskovits and the Future of Africana Studies (Schomburg Center, May 1988); Marcus Garvey Centennial Conference (Jamaica, November 1987); and the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (Nigeria, 1977). less

Edgar Thomas Williams Jr. (1937- ) is an art collector, real estate investor, and philanthropist from New York City. The E.T. Williams papers date from 1952 to 2011 (bulk dates 1980-1992), and consist of files chronicling Williams' art collecting, banking career, real estate investments, charitable donations, board memberships, political contributions, service in the Peace Corps, and personal life. The collection includes correspondence, donation records, real estate files, meeting minutes, legal documents, and event invitations regarding Williams' business ventures, philanthropy, and family life. less

The 135th Street Branch Records document staff activities as they serviced the information needs of the Harlem community. There are eleven ledgers (1905-1935) containing lists of acquisitions, circulation statistics, library card registrations, and fines. There are also annual Children's Room reports from 1922 to 1950. The Correspondence, 1921-1951, includes a folder of correspondence between Ernestine Rose and Franklin F. Hopper, the Chief of the Circulation Department of the New York Public Library, and a file for Dorothy R. Homer, who became the Branch Librarian following Ernestine Rose's retirement in 1942. less
