George Wotherspoon was a theatrical and motion picture publicist, theatrical manager, stage critic, and journalist. George Wotherspoon began his theatrical career in 1889, when he managed the Australian and European tour of LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY. He was a published critic as early as 1887, and in the summer 1895 he began a daily column for the New York Evening Telegram. In 1899 he began a five-year stint with the New York Evening Journal as reporter and drama editor. Wotherspoon's involvement in motion pictures began as early as 1899, when he promoted a film depicting the Tom Sharkey-Jim Jeffries boxing match. In 1911, he promoted an experimental "Kinemacolor" film of the coronation of King George V. For several years, beginning in 1904, Wotherspoon was a press agent for the Dreamland and Luna Park attractions at Coney Island. From 1917 to 1920, he worked as reporter, columnist, drama critic, and writer of feature stories for the New York Evening Telegram. Throughout this period he also acted as press agent for motion pictures such as CLEOPATRA (1917) starring Theda Bara, D. W. Griffith's ORPHANS OF THE STORM (1921), and Cecil B. DeMille's KING OF KINGS (1927). Wotherspoon continued to act as manager and advance man for stage shows through the 1920s, and, in the waning days of vaudeville, managed units of players who would perform in motion picture theaters prior to the showing of the film. The George Wotherspoon papers consist of a scrapbook of clippings and other items, documents such as letters, caricatures, and photographs, and a poster advertising the 1889 production of LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY which was an early milestone in George Wotherspoon's career. The bulk of the collection is found in a scrapbook which was apparently begun by Wotherspoon himself in the 1930s and completed by his daughter Elita Wilson in 1990. Wotherspoon wrote a 9-page Chronology for this scrapbook, covering the highlights of his career from 1889 to 1934. The Chronology is followed by dozens of testimonial letters from various employers speaking highly of Wotherspoon and his professional abilities. Also in the scrapbook are clippings of Wotherspoon's play reviews and theater-related feature stories from the New York Evening Journal circa 1900-1902, and the New York Telegram, circa 1917-1918. Also in the scrapbook, tucked within the front cover, are two items: a souvenir ticket made of silver which commemorates the opening night of INFORMATION, PLEASE!, the premiere attraction at the Selwyn Theatre which opened on October 2, 1918, and a booklet entitled LITTLE MESSAGES OF TRUTH AND FICTION by George Wotherspoon, published in 1917 and featuring what the author considered his best advertising lines. Mabel Albertson (1901-1982), actress and writer, worked steadily on stage, in films, and on radio and television, for over forty years. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on July 24th, 1901, Mabel Albertson was the sister of actor Jack Albertson. After graduating from the New England School of Speech and Expression, Mabel moved directly into professional stage work in stock, vaudeville, and night clubs, appearing with Jimmy Durante. During the 1930s she became prominent in radio, co-starring with comedian Phil Baker on THE ARMOUR HOUR (1933-35), later on NBC's DRESS REHEARSAL (1936-37), with Joe Rines and Pinky Lee, to which she also contributed script ideas, dialog, and gags. In 1937 Mabel Albertson married radio writer Ken England. Her film career took off in the 1950s with character roles in such movies as SHE'S BACK ON BROADWAY (1953), ABOUT MRS. LESLIE (1954) with Shirley Booth, FOREVER DARLING (1956) with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, THE LONG HOT SUMMER (1958), and DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP (1959). In the 1960s, Mabel Albertson appeared on most of the top-rated series on television, including GUNSMOKE, PERRY MASON, THE MUNSTERS, BONANZA, and THAT GIRL, and became best known for her continuing role on BEWITCHED as Elizabeth Montgomery's mother-in-law. Mabel Albertson retired from acting in the mid-1970s and died, of Alzheimer's disease, on September 28, 1982, at the age of 81. The Mabel Albertson scrapbook spans 1933-1939, and consists of clippings from newspapers and magazines, playbills, and other materials related to the life and career of Mabel Albertson. The emphasis in the scrapbook, which ends in November 1939, is on Mabel Albertson's radio career, particularly THE ARMOUR HOUR and DRESS REHEARSAL, although there are also reviews included of stage appearances. less

Karl Bernstein was a theatrical publicist for New York theater productions from 1925 to 1970. Bernstein began his career as a vaudeville critic but soon became a theatrical publicist in the 1920s representing theatres in his native Brooklyn. Moving to Broadway he publicized such noted works as those written by Gershwin and Cole Porter. He was a founding member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. He died in New York in 1983. The Karl Bernstein Scrapbooks contain clippings, programs, press releases, reviews, halftones, and some photographs of theater productions spanning his career from 1925 to 1971. Included are scrapbooks for numerous musicals by such composers as Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Vernon Duke, Jule Styne, Morton Gould, Kurt Weill, and Sandy Wilson, as well as some plays and operettas.
