Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, writers of stage, screen, television and radio were both born in Ohio. They met in New York where they were pursuing careers in broadcasting. Among the founding fathers of Armed Forces Radio, they created and adapted many stories for radio. Later they entered the world of commercial broadcasting for both radio and television. In the 1940s they began writing plays. Among their best known works are Auntie Mame, Mame, Inherit the Wind and The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail . The Lawrence and Lee papers consist of their early correspondence and writings from broadcasting including Armed Forces Radio and commercial radio and television as well as production files and scripts from many of their major works. Also included are project ideas, other writings and speeches, scrapbooks and some photographs. The papers document their careers up until the mid-1960s. Missing from the collection are their works after this date. less

The collection consists primarily of correspondence (bulk late 1950s) concerning Row's writings, especially his book on Sarah Bernhardt; and the writings themselves, mostly theatrical reminiscences, in typescript and note form. As well as Bernhardt, Row wrote laudatory personal accounts of the Barrymores, John Gielgud, Richard Mansfield, Paul Muni, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Ellen Terry and Blanche Yurka, among others. The collection also contains some personal biographical material, publicity for Row's book, clippings of play reviews, and some material, mostly publicity, for The Afternoon Theatre under Row's direction. less

The Vincent J. Donehue correspondence and ephemera includes letters, written primarily by Vincent Donehue to Helen Fay and Eleanor Foote, bookstore owners and friends from Albany, New York, whom he met while attending school at SUNY Albany. The collection appears to have belonged to Helen Fay, since it contains materials primarily addressed to her. Some of the letters include book orders placed by Donehue for Christmas and birthday gifts to friends and professional contacts. Other materials in the collection include cards, newsclippings of plays, movies and television programs involving Donehue and some personal photographs. less
